I can get non hd playback by setting Option "NVAGP" "1" in my xorg.conf, but hd video playback drops a lot of frames and is straining to watch. Also with Option "NVAGP" "1" set I get
Code:
mythtv@mythtv:~$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status:     Disabled

Ok so I have been trying all of the deinterlace modes, and all of them yield the same results. It crashes.

You need to provide greater hardware details.

Cecil et al,
I've just begun to see this bug after a clean install of R5.5 on an 80Gb SATA drive in my backend. In my case, the message is:

BUG: soft lockup - CPU#X stuck for 11s! [mbmon:nnnn].

I've been doing some research on the bug, and so far, all of the suggestions have brought no resolution. Tried installing "irqbalance", appending LILO with "acpi=no", and a few other tricks I can't remember right now.

Major bummer because I really, really like what I see in R5.5 in terms of improvements over R5F27.

My hardware is in my sig. This bug is not specific to Debian or Knoppix and thus not specific to MythTV or KnoppMyth. It appears to be a kernel-related issue (which really bums me out because the last thing I want to ask for is a bloody custom kernel!).

My current R5F27 install is on a 500Gb IDE drive and this problem does not appear.

I gave up on my R5.5 install last night after wrestling with this for 4 hrs. I'll get back after it tonight, but from what I can gather, it may be a futile gesture.

EDIT Oct. 15, 2008, 10PM:
I followed this thread http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=16546 to disable mbmon and use sensors instead to monitor MBTemp and MBFan. This action stopped periodic system hangs and crushed the BUG error messages in syslog. Friggin' yay, mon! 8)
