Video for frontend. Nvidia 6/7?

Post subject:  Video for frontend. Nvidia 6/7?
I plan on building two frontends from some older hardware I have. These systems only have AGP slots so will an Nvidia 6/7 card be enough to run 1080i?

They will only be playing 1080i at any given time. The recording will be done by a dedicated box.

I plan on going diskless on the frontend, and have already tried with a mix of ATI/Nvidia cards. That does not work very well.

I can pickup a 6 series for pretty cheap.

Yeah, more horsepower for decoding HDTV helps up to a point, but you don't need 3D gaming support, or want to get something that sucks a lot of power, producing a lot of heat, and requiring a big noisy active HSF to keep it from cooking.
    - Better made 5xxx series AGP 4/8X boards will work.
    - Good 6xxx series AGP or PCIe boards that don't depend on system RAM will do a bit better.
    - I seem to remember some breakage in the 7xxx series, like no XvMC support or the like, but you'll have to search for the details.
    - And the current "hot" Media PC video chip is the 8400 which has vdpau support in beta. It'll apparently even work as on a PCI bus, where other cards don't have enough bandwidth for the most demanding HDTV resolutions.

No PCI slots at all? I've never seen a board that had AGP that didn't have PCI. If you do have the ability to use a PCI video board, an 8400GS should be superior to a 6/7 series if you're using VDPAU as tjc mentioned. The version of mplayer-vdpau that is included in R6 is nothing short of amazing in this regard w/ an 8400GS (PCI).

Well this is for my backed right now. I was trying to get a diskless frontend online, but the be had an ATI card, and the fe had an onboard nVidia card so they didnt play nice.

I do have PCI slots, but not that I can give up for the video card. Need all 5 for SATA card, and tuners ;)

I am building another fe soon that I could put a 8400GS in, but if an AMD 3200+ 2GB, and a 6200 can play 1080i/p I would rather just stick with that I think.

I want to put these three systems together spending as little as possible. I have been using my old PC and just buying the parts I absolutly need. The only system I plan to lesave on is the be.

I guess is will come down to my hardware being able to play 1080i/p that determines if I get an 8400 or a 6200.

Just as a reassuring update, the FX5200 in my system is happily playing back 1080 content using XvMC at about 50% CPU usage. Now if I could just get the darn HD-3000 to capture a clean stream ... :?
