Nice and cheap, but no network port.

Yeah, I was wondering if the Mythtv fols could enable some code to use a USB port for a class of equipment like that.....

Post subject:  A great, inexpensive way to play HD videos

I bought one a few couple weeks ago specifically to play HD video content on my new HD TV. None of my current myth boxes have the power to play HD, so I spent $100 on the WD HD Media player, and another $20 on a USB ethernet adapter.

With firmware from http://b-rad.cc/wdlxtv, the tiny little WD box plays 720P files stored on my master backend shared over NFS with no problems (upscaled by the WD unit to 1080P@60hz). According to forum posts at http://wdtvforum.com/main, it will play 1080p over NFS without problems. The modified firmware, which provided network support, works great. I have 2 minor issues with the WD player - with the modified firmware, it is slow to boot (probably around a minute, which is an eternity while staring a blank screen), and I haven't found a way to automatically hide empty directories. The interface isn't the best, but I dont' think I could have updated (or built) a new myth box capable of 1080P output and HD decoding for the $120 I spent on the WD unit.

All in all, I'm very happy with the WD HD media player. It does what it's supposed to, and with the modified firmware, a lot more. And it's portable (in the car, pluged into the built in dvd players monitor, or anywhere that has composite or HDMI inputs available).

Feel free to ask any specific questions - I'll do my best to answer them.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I was not aware that a hack was available which allowed Ethernet support.

Can you delete a recording after watching it?

Not that I am aware of, at least not by using the remote. There seems to be no direct control of any filesystems, with the stock OR the modified firmware.

I still haven't found a way to get it to hide empty directories either. I'm still happy with it, tho - it's still an inexpensive way to get true HD output.
