I have an Asus Xonar DX sound card that was working perfectly in R5.5 after manually compiling alsa. After upgrading to R6, the analog out will play audio to head phones or speakers fine, but the 3.5mm stereo-to-RCA cable going to my TV doesn't produce any sound on the TV. :cry:
All "tests" i've done are using speaker-test, aplay, and mplayer with VDPAU enabled.

Without changing any configurations, boot the ubuntu 9 i386 liveCD and audio tests work on the TV without any modifications. :shock:

I have also tried connecting my unibody macbook to the same cables my PVR is using and the audio/video output works perfectly.

i've tried compiling alsa 1.0.20(drivers,lib,utils,oss) per the alsa instructions here and I get the same result.

I also tried the 1.0.20 packages from ArchLinux repos with the same outcome.

Current state: Ran make uninstall from the alsa-* source directories, reinstalled alsa-* packages and the kernel and kernel-header packages from knoppmyth R6 repo.

I have tried many alsamixer combination's with & with-out IEC958, Line-In, Front Panel muted/un-muted. nothing will get the audio to output to the TV, but ALWAYS will play to an external PC speaker( Altec Lansing SoundBar ) or my ipod headphones.

Here is some (hopefully useful) command output that might allow someone to help me cause i'm at a loss right now.

Hi mcdrama,

Sorry you are having trouble. Can't offer any help here as I have the same problem. What i couldn't figure out is how to compile the new ALSA drivers on ARCH linux. I don't think it is as simple as loading the alsa-lib and alsa-util from another repository. After loading these packages, I still get:

[root@KnoppmythB]# cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.18rc3.

I did not see that 1.0.20 was installed. So my guess that the new driver is not loaded. See the instruction for R5E27.

Do you get audio out to head/ear phones?

Actually, I am getting audio out of my 3.5 mm jack. I misread your post late last night and thought you were trying to get the audio working through the HDMI connector. That is what I am ultimately trying to do. To do that, I need to update my alsa drivers as you do. I couldn't figure out how to do it for R6. Mike's pointers look like they should do the trick. If successfully build the packages, I will let you know.

audio over hdmi is a pita from what i've looked at. I'm quite content for now with the RCA/Stereo setup if it would work!
It blows me away that I can get audio out of speakers and ear phones but not to my TV.

I may mail this to the alsa list because it is very, very, strange. ubuntu 9.04 is running the same version of alsa as R6, 1.0.18rc3.

archlinux has 1.0.20 packages but they likely wont work since they are compiled against a newer kernel.

I have audio over hdmi in R6. I could not get it to work using alsa. You need to configure the frontend. Service menu/Linhes configuration/Audio settings. Choose load oss driver. Then test each of your dev's until you find which one works. Mine was dsp7.

I did get HDMI working on a R6 fresh install with ALSA 1.0.18rc3 yesterday. The current R6 beta ships with ALSA 1.0.18rc3. To determine which version you have installed, executed the following:

Code:
$ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.18rc3.

Here is a rough outline of what I did.

I set the audio menu in LinHES service menu to tinker. I am a little spooked by audio settings MythVantage/LinHES construct as I not sure what they do. They're are a number of ways to configure the audio in ALSA and it was more work to reverse engineer the configuration. Also, there is mythtv configuration for audio and I'm not sure how these two play together.Instead, I tried to go with the simplest configuration possible.

I first figured out where my output devices are mapped on my ASUS P5N7A-VM by the following:

Code:
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
the list of registered cards
 0 [NVidia         ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
                      HDA NVidia at 0xf9e78000 irq 22
$ cat /proc/asound/pcm
the list of allocated pcm streams
00-00: ALC1200 Analog : ALC1200 Analog : playback 1 : capture 1
00-01: ALC1200 Digital : ALC1200 Digital : playback 1
00-02: ALC1200 Analog : ALC1200 Analog : capture 1
00-03: NVIDIA HDMI : NVIDIA HDMI : playback 1

This shows I have one sound card and 3 playback pcm devices (0,1,3) and 2 capture pcm devices (0,2). To test the HDMI output, I would use card 0, device 3. I also need to turn the digital audio output on using alsamixer. You can tell you turned on a optical SPDIF because the light turns on. You need to do the same step for HDMI. For my board, I found this was "IEC958_1", but you can turn anything with IEC958 in its name. It does not seem to hurt to have multiple digital out put devices enabled. Once you enabled the digital output, you can test it with mplayer:

Code:
mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=0.3  /usr/share/sounds/restored.wav

You can substitute your favorite mp3 file for a longer test. You should be able to hear the audio being played by your TV set. If that works, you've got the right card and device.

Having figured out the correct device, I next created a simple asound.conf file with one entry for default device.
Code:
sudo nano /etc/asound.conf
   pcm.!default {
       type hw
       card 0
       device 3
   }

I then configured mythtv to used the default ALSA device "ALSA:default" in the mythtv configuration (non LinHES) general menu.

I configured mplayer to use the ALSA default device by adding the following to the default system wide configuration file.

Code:
nano /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf
##################
# audio settings #
##################
# Specify default audio driver (see -ao help for a list).
ao=alsa:device=hw=0.3

# Specify the audio codecs to use.  Chose AC3 passthrough then DTS then default
ac=hwac3,hwdts,

Your TV might not handle the AC3 pass through correctly. So you can comment out the line begining with "ac=" out to start. After this edit, mplayer should invoke the ALSA:default device as specified /etc/asound.conf.

Originally, I updated my drivers to ALSA 1.0.20 compiled from source before wiped my box and started from scratch. I have a script for downloading and compiling teh ALSA 1.0.20 which I can share if anyone would like it.

so has anyone experienced a problem similar to mine? i'm not trying to get HDMI out working. I just don't understand why the *exact* same drivers, but ubuntu audio out works fine, but with R6 it only works for head phones or powered PC speakers.

Thank-you very much for taking the trouble to put in such a helpful and detailed post. Having wasted so much time trying to get alsa to work over hdmi, I admire your achievement.

Do you happen to know if this also works with the xbmc in the repo? Whilst I could get R6 to work with oss, I had no luck with xbmc.

guys, please, start another thread related to audio over hdmi. dirty threads on forums makes it difficult to find useful information. there are two completely different issues being discussed here.

Not trying to be a jerk, but I find this is a big problem on forums and it sucks when you're trying to seek help on an issue.
