Post subject:  Network card suggestions?

Looks like my MB network thingy is taking a dump. I've done all the testing and cleaning and it must have a short on the board to connector joint and it's getting more and more temperamental.

Not ready to put money out for a new MB, so is there an easy/cheap card I can drop in for network? have USB ports too.

I'm partial to Intel NIC's. [crotchety rant] They always seemed easier to me in terms of "just working" and are considered (by me) to be better than any RealTek chip based POS. Jumbo frames (if that's important to you) are usually supported (google the chipset and jumbo) at the max rate (9k frame) as opposed to a bunch of RealTek I've run into that only go to 4k if jumbos are supported at all. Yes, Intel's cost more, but IMO, you get what you pay for. I'm tired of cheap crap.[/crotchety rant]

What great timing. I too just had my onboard NIC crap out. Anyway, I just ordered another one of these for just udner $30 shipped. I have them in my MBE and FE, and soon-to-be in my other FE.

-Works out-of-the-box w/ KM, Debian, Ubuntu, and Arch
-PCI 2.0 so it'll work with older hardware
-Jumbo Frames (up to 9k)
-Gigalan
-$28 shipped

You can't go wrong :)

Thanks for the input. I think for the price the D-link is where I'm headed. Thanks again.

Mine just came and it installed wo/ issue. I have that machine booted into Arch for the moment, but will reboot into LinHES soon to get it up in there too. It works great under Arch with 4k jumbo frames :)

Pity their support of linux doesn't extend to their graphics cards

Off topic but I don't understand why anyone would use an Intel, ATI, brand X card for Linux. nVidia and Linux play very well together. Just get yourself a nice 8800 GTS and enjoy :)
