Post subject: | R6 SPDIF Audio out not working.. |
This card worked ok with ALSA on R5F27. Now I'm loading R6. When I try OSS & "load OSS" drivers in the service menu I was excited to see my card correctly recognized as follows: Code: CMedia CM8768 rev 68 (dsp0) But when I hit the 'test audio' button I get silence. So then I switch devices, namely: Code: CMedia CM8768 playback only (dsp1) and try that still silence. My sound card is hooked up to my receiver via SPDIF/optical only, I have not hooked anything else up so it's possible the other o/ps are working but all I want to work is SPDIF. The receiver gets no signal at all. I get no other device options other than the above 2. When I try ALSA, I get nothing. Note from the pastes below, it looks like it is working ok (at least to my untrained eye). I'm guessing maybe that I just need to somehow direct the audio output to /dev/dsp_spdifout? TIA, Paul [root@fe-1 ~]# ls -l /dev/dsp* Code: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2009-09-16 22:36 /dev/dsp -> /dev/oss/oss_cmpci0/pcm0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2009-09-16 22:36 /dev/dsp0 -> /dev/oss/oss_cmpci0/pcm0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2009-09-16 22:36 /dev/dsp1 -> /dev/oss/oss_cmpci0/pcm1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2009-09-16 22:36 /dev/dsp_ac3 -> /dev/oss/oss_cmpci0/pcm0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2009-09-16 22:36 /dev/dsp_in -> /dev/oss/oss_cmpci0/pcm0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2009-09-16 22:36 /dev/dsp_mmap -> /dev/oss/oss_cmpci0/pcm0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2009-09-16 22:36 /dev/dsp_multich -> /dev/oss/oss_cmpci0/pcm0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2009-09-16 22:36 /dev/dsp_out -> /dev/oss/oss_cmpci0/pcm0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2009-09-16 22:36 /dev/dsp_spdifin -> /dev/oss/oss_cmpci0/pcm0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2009-09-16 22:36 /dev/dsp_spdifout -> /dev/oss/oss_cmpci0/pcm0 [root@fe-1 ~]# lsmod Code: Module Size Used by ipv6 260084 12 oss_usb 111244 0 oss_cmpci 24048 0 osscore 537876 2 oss_usb,oss_cmpci lirc_mod_mce 16772 1 lirc_dev 13492 1 lirc_mod_mce nvidia 9589768 36 ppdev 9348 0 parport_pc 37700 1 lp 11108 0 parport 33004 3 ppdev,parport_pc,lp serio_raw 7172 0 uhci_hcd 24592 0 sg 26804 0 pcspkr 4352 0 ehci_hcd 36876 0 intel_agp 27836 1 i2c_i801 10896 0 iTCO_wdt 12836 0 shpchp 34068 0 iTCO_vendor_support 4996 1 iTCO_wdt agpgart 31572 2 nvidia,intel_agp i2c_core 22804 2 nvidia,i2c_i801 pci_hotplug 28064 1 shpchp usbcore 136848 5 oss_usb,lirc_mod_mce,uhci_hcd,ehci_hcd psmouse 55828 0 evdev 11296 4 thermal 17180 0 processor 41388 1 thermal fan 6276 0 button 7824 0 battery 12036 0 ac 6020 0 rtc_cmos 12332 0 rtc_core 17564 1 rtc_cmos rtc_lib 4480 1 rtc_core sr_mod 16708 0 cdrom 35360 1 sr_mod pata_acpi 6016 0 ata_piix 23300 0 libata 158112 2 pata_acpi,ata_piix scsi_mod 102164 3 sg,sr_mod,libata [root@fe-1 ~]# dmesg Code: BIOS EBDA/lowmem at: 0009fc00/0009f800 Linux version 2.6.28-LinHES (root@dev) (gcc version 4.3.3 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Aug 17 05:38:57 UTC 2009 KERNEL supported cpus: Intel GenuineIntel AMD AuthenticAMD NSC Geode by NSC Cyrix CyrixInstead Centaur CentaurHauls Transmeta GenuineTMx86 Transmeta TransmetaCPU UMC UMC UMC UMC BIOS-provided physical RAM map: BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009fc00 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000000009fc00 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000e0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000002fff0000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000002fff0000 - 0000000030000000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) DMI 2.3 present. last_pfn = 0x2fff0 max_arch_pfn = 0x100000 x86 PAT enabled: cpu 0, old 0x7040600070406, new 0x7010600070106 Scanning 2 areas for low memory corruption modified physical RAM map: modified: 0000000000000000 - 0000000000002000 (usable) modified: 0000000000002000 - 0000000000006000 (reserved) modified: 0000000000006000 - 0000000000007000 (usable) modified: 0000000000007000 - 0000000000010000 (reserved) modified: 0000000000010000 - 0000000000092c00 (usable) modified: 000000000009fc00 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) modified: 00000000000e0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) modified: 0000000000100000 - 000000002fff0000 (usable) modified: 000000002fff0000 - 0000000030000000 (reserved) modified: 00000000fec00000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) kernel direct mapping tables up to 2fff0000 @ 10000-16000 RAMDISK: 2fe2d000 - 2ffcf9a1 ACPI: RSDP 000EA410, 0014 (r0 COMPAQ) ACPI: RSDT 000E5E40, 0074 (r1 COMPAQ CPQ0064 20030710 0) ACPI: FACP 000E5EF8, 0074 (r1 COMPAQ SPRINGD 1 0) ACPI: DSDT 000E6008, 0D7D (r1 COMPAQ DSDT 1 MSFT 100000E) ACPI: FACS 000E5E00, 0040 ACPI: SSDT 000E6D85, 05FE (r1 COMPAQ PROJECT 1 MSFT 100000E) ACPI: SSDT 000E7383, 053A (r1 COMPAQ CORE_PNP 1 MSFT 100000E) ACPI: SSDT 000E78BD, 01F2 (r1 COMPAQ CORE_UTL 1 MSFT 100000E) ACPI: SSDT 000E7AAF, 032E (r1 COMPAQ VILLTBL1 1 MSFT 100000E) ACPI: SSDT 000E7DDD, 053F (r1 COMPAQ LGCYLITE 1 MSFT 100000E) ACPI: SSDT 000E831C, 0167 (r1 COMPAQ UART2 1 MSFT 100000E) ACPI: SSDT 000E8483, 014E (r1 COMPAQ FLOPPY 1 MSFT 100000E) ACPI: APIC 000E5F6C, 0068 (r1 COMPAQ SPRINGD 1 0) ACPI: SSDT 000EA16D, 00B2 (r1 COMPAQ APIC 1 MSFT 100000E) ACPI: ASF! Fixes it but doesn't survive a reboot.. Put it into /etc/runit/1.local but it didn't work, is there somewhere else it should go? I'm thinking this deserves a flyspray? Lastly, should I stick with ALSA as this seems to be the most popular? I don't want to be one of the few ppl using OSS... |

I read recently that OSS has made a lot of advancements this year. I downloaded and compiled it on my Ubuntu laptop (T60) and it works flawlessly. You can get the source from http://www.4front-tech.com/developer/sources/stable/gpl/. I would Google for my hardware and OSS and see how well it's supported and make an informed choice then. Generally, I will go with the best solution, not the most popular and I'm not really sure why you would base your decision on popularity, when you're using Linux, which is clearly much less popular than Windows. Easy - I'm a linux noob, I rely on msg boards etc a lot for help. If I'm using some non-common choice then I can't expect much help from others nor from trolling website etc. Thx for the source suggestion but I'm too much of a scardy cat to go off downloading and compiling source for pkgs supported by linhes.. |

Heh. Just after I posted that I noticed there was a new OSS release. Took me two hours to fix it, and I'm quite good at this stuff! Your LinHes will do the installation for you. OSS is very good, and since it's so easy from the menu, you may as well try it. OSS has been around a long time and there's a lot of support. And you're right about the help thing. You do need it and Linux people are much more likely to share what they know. |
