Post subject:  ATI HD4200 driver for R6?

I am installing a new board (m4a785td-m evo) and wanted to use the onboard card if possible. The local computer shop swore I would have no issues with this ATI card and from what I saw I hoped they may be right...

Now, I am a few hours into trying to get it to work....

I have tried the "radeon" setting in xorg.conf but it does not even recognize my card from what I can tell.

So, any advice beyond going and buying an NVIDIA card, which I am about to do.

I have seen some arch users that have gotten it to work but I cannot get pacman to install the packages that they are talking about - and that may be a learning curve for Arch and myself.

Thanks,

Walter

If you value your time then that was a good call. ATI will work but you will be pretty much on your own determining drivers and config. Sadly ATI has neglected the open source community too long hence the complexity.

Having been loyal to ATI for ages I gave it the old college try in the early days of myth and then switched to nvidia. I still think ATI makes a better chipset but nvidia on linux is just way easier.

Funny thing is the ubuntu live cd I used to backup my partition seemed to have little issue getting X to start, then again it was not playing video or anything.

That is where the issues start, decoding things like H.264 or dealing with TV style displays. Stock X is usually just fine.

Nvidia works out of the box for pretty much everything. I use mainboards with nvidia video chipsets built in and it makes for a nice and tight package.
