Post subject:  What are different Hauppauge HD-PVR hardware versions?

I'm looking at buying an HD-PVR and see two different numbers on the bottom of the boxes in the store. They are SL-1212-V5.1-US and V5.2. I've been googling but not having any success and finding the differences? I've seen a thread here about problems with a 4903 version. Is that a newer version and is it best to avoid the newer version? Is there any real advantage to any version or did they just change chipsets or something?

Thanks for any help.

Have you checked the Hauppauge website? They're techies themselves, and at least back in the PVR-150/250/350 days they had pretty useful product comparisons and often even explained the positioning.

I'll take a shot... I can't speak to the commercial designations, but they sound like a US and a non-US version.

I bought one recently from Amazon and ran into the '4903' problem. This isn't a designation on the box, but a version tracking burned into the firmware. Your software reads it.... and in the case of Linux drivers in the kernal, haven't caught up to listing it as supported by the software, so it won't open in 'card setup'

This is fixed by implementing the bugfix 723 (http://linhes.org/bugs/issues/723) and forcing the install (or it will refuse, finding the older data without the 4903 inclusion present.)
Re-submitted as bug 764

You might get a non-4903 if you happened on somebody's old stock, but you have no way to tell by sales model numbers.

Eventually the problem will go away when the v4l-dvb drivers with the 4903 inclusion find their way into the kernal....

A further note:

7.00.02 with a pacman -Syu update as of 5/18/11 will open a 4903 HD-PVR, without needing to resort to the bugfix....

:D
