I'm having a problem with my sound quality. The problem only occurs durings live TV and when I watch recordings. Playing music or videos from other sources work fine with good sound. I'm currently using an old WinTV-GO capture card that takes the coax input, then has a 1/8" jack to output the sound. So, I have that connected to the line-in on my onboard sound. I was surprised that the sound/video sync was perfectly fine, just the problem with the background noise. I also tried plugging in a pair of headphones to the capture card's sound output to check for the noise there, but it was all clear. I don't think it's a bad cable, as I'm pretty sure I've used it for other things without problems. Any suggestions for a fix?

A little updated information...

It seems that the problem is not happening on all channels, and some are worse than others. I'm starting to wonder if the tuner isn't tuning to exactly the right frequencies for the channels that are having the problems. Anyone have any idea whether or not that is a possibility/ Also, if it is, any ideas on how to fix it?

You can use the fine tuning page in the web interface to adjustments, however you're more likely to see picture artifacts before you hear sound ones.

I'd say it's slightly more likely that you have some kind of cross talk or interference from the video signal. Try moving your cables while watching something and if you can hear a difference that's the place to look. Sadly there are cases where the interference is right on the Motherboard...

I've been tinkering with this a bit more, but still no luck. I did some reading about installing ALSA instead of OSS...but I'm not completely clear on what's already included/installed with KnoppMyth. The MythTV documentation gives step by step instructions, but they're written for people who have some knowledge of linux...which I'm lacking. For example, in the section about installing ALSA, it tells you to download three files to be installed. How do I download them, and what folder do I download them to? I've gotten them on my windows machine, but I can't figure out how to copy them to the myth machine, as it says access denied when trying to copy to the shared folders. The MythTV docs also talk about using alsamixer. I tried that command and it worked, but when I make adjustments in there, there is no effect. Any more suggestions?

Also...just for clarity, the PVR250 doesn't use a sound output that needs to be looped back into the sound card does it? I'm strongly considering getting one, but I'd just like to know that I won't have to deal with this same situation for that card.

Still trying to pinpoint this problem...and found an interesting new piece to the puzzle. I found 2 channels (out of 79) that don't seem to have any sound problems. Although the sound and picture are not quite perfect, I think that is more from the signal than anything to do with the KnoppMyth setup, as they are very comparable to viewing through my cable box. I'm really thinking this has to be a problem with the sound setup, and I've tried following the instructions in the MythTV docs, but my newness to linux is giving me problems. In the section about using ALSA drivers, it says I'll need three files. I've found them on the website, but I don't know how/where to download them from my myth box so I can install them. The commands that follow in the instructions don't work for me because I haven't installed those files. Any help?
