I'm not getting much joy from the initial hardware configuration I selected for KnoppMyth. I have an Abit m/b with nforce2 and integrated nvidia video. Great, so far. Next I added a wireless RF keyboard/mouse and two additional hard disks with a PCI based IDE card (Promise). The wireless keyboard causes a kernel halt (flashing keyboard leds) at boot up, and the two extra disks (three total) are not usable under Debian (but they are usable under Acronis Partition Manager, which uses some other Linux distro for its emergency boot CD).

So I'm ready to change something. Either I'm going to pitch the m/b and look for one which has enough IDE interfaces on board (unlikely since everyone's changing to SATA now and my drives are ATA), or try some distro other than Knoppix and load MythTV "the hard way" instead of using KnoppMyth. (Another reason to change the m/b is that I've heard the P4 is much faster than my AXP 2500 at transcoding MPEG2 to MPEG4.)

All suggestions are welcome!

Joe Barnhart

I should have been a little more specific. I have a 200G drive as hda, and knoppmyth can install to it just fine. The two extra disks are 250G disks at hde and hdf. They are on a Promise non-raid IDE controller card. During boot up I get numerous messages about hde and hdf being unavailable and, once booted, I can't see them with fdisk. But I can boot up on Acronis Paritiion Expert and see/partition/format the drives to my heart's content.

Well, it sounds you either need to find a Linux driver for you HD controller and compile it into your kernel, move the drives to another box and NFS mount them, get a Mobo with more than two IDE channels, leave one of the drives out for now, ... There's lots of options...

As for the keyboard, they're cheap, and there are a couple threads from a while back that discuss lots of known good wireless keyboards...

Good ideas. I've ordered the Lite-On keyboard I read about on the forum. It's a non-USB model so I think it will work better. (Too bad I wasted $100 on the stupid RF one, but that's life.)

The Promise controller is a real disappointment. I am surprised I have to dig up and compile a driver for such a common card. Oh well. Time to quit whining and gut it out.

for ide cards 3ware is always a good bet. they are a bit more expensive, but worth every penny.
