Here is my setup:

Chaintech 7NIF2 motherboard, Athlon XP 2400+, 512Mb, 120Gb HD, PVR-350

This is my second setup from scratch, having just replaced my previous motherboard with the 7NIF2. I installed R4V5 and let it reformat the drive so that nothing was left over from the previous install.

I have followed all the fine step by step guides available here and on knoppmythwiki to set up the PVR-350. At first, everything appears fine. I can watch live tv, have sound, have remote working, everything.

I then schedule a recording. Doesn't matter what (I've done this 4 times now). The channel I'm recording from I was able to view in live TV. But after the recording has begun, trying to view the recorded show shows only a black screen. Also, after the first show has been recorded, trying to go back to live TV shows only a black screen (no sound in either case). Looking at the /myth/tv drive I can see it is putting the files there, although they are much smaller than they would be if they contained more than black screens (mpg is terribly efficient at compressing 00000000.....).

The frontend doesn't ever lock up, and if I reboot the system then I get live TV back until the next time I try to record something. One of the times I tried this, the frontend GUI got hosed (colors were all black except the menu text). Can't explain that either.

Anybody ever seen this or have a suggestion?

A note: this isn't like any of the problems I had with my previous motherboard. In that case, I could record shows and view live tv just fine. But I was getting the occasional lockups and then blinky-light lockup at boot often. So I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the PVR-350.

I think I know what I did to cause this. Part my system setup is getting the user and groups aligned with my other linux boxes. I got my mythtv group privileges messed up and fixed them with this command (as su):

# usermod -g mythtv -G tty,cdrom,audio,video,usb,sudo,mysql mythtv

Now (as of one attempt so far...) it looks like no more black-screen-and-no-tv-after-first-recording problem.
