I am specifically interested in the Niveus remote, but I didn't find anything via search - either google or local.

In any case, I was wondering what remotes you guys had working in your systems, what it took to get it to work, and where you got them.

Thank you!

Never heard of that remote, but that does mean anything... Viisit lirc.org for all your needs.

Doing a google search of lirc and niveus yields exactly seven results. It doesn't look promising. I did that search before I posted, which is why I'm asking here - there is no definitive information elsewhere.

Those two remotes interest me the most. :) I'd rather know if they are supported well under linux before plunking down the cash for them. I see some posts about the ATI remote wonder, but they aren't particularly encouraging.

what do you like about the nevius remote so much more? You doubt that it is supported in linux and it is more expensive than the ati, so what's the attraction?

and what is so discouraging about the ati? the fact that you know it's supported, and can be setup in seconds?

The niveus has an IR component for controlling other devices. I've built myself an IR blaster, but it would be nice if I didn't have to use it (it is a little ugly).

From my reading, it looks like a PITA to remap keys using the ati remote kernel module (source code edit + recompile). Was I reading old threads, and this is no longer true?

The niveus, ATI remote, and the X10 remote look remarkably similar... they are probably all from the same manufacturer and could probably use the same driver. I'm mainly looking for confirmation that this remote works in linux. I have used one in windows, and it works fine. Unfortunately, that particular one belongs to a family member I don't have day to day access to (as in, lives far away).

So... does anybody have any testimonials as to the linux compatibility of the niveus?

well yes I believe that it is rather a pain to remap keys, but the defaults are fairly sane, and lots of remaping can be done from the web interface for mythtv, at least for the mythtv portion.

If they do indeed use the same driver you would be looking at the same problem remapping keys.

True, but that's one of the reasons I'm asking, as I'm unsure. ;)

I would also be very interested in hearing what remotes people have working with KnoppMyth.

I can buy any remote out there, so I'm not tied to any particular brand (although I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible). I also don't want to do any DIY wiring.

Is the ATI Remote Wonder a standalone remote, or is it sold with the video card? I already have a video card so that would rule it out.

Any other remotes that people recommend?

the remote wonder is a stand alone remote, and is actually linked in one of the posts earlier in the thread.

I didn't find the link you meant, but I just googled for it and found some reviews: http://www.remotecentral.com/wonder/

I was dissapointed to learn that it's an RF remote. I know most people prefer them, but if I'm going to have a universal remote, I'd like it to control everything in my home theater setup (TV, receiver, etc), so I think I'm limited to IR.

Any IR remote recommendations that work well under Linux?

I just tried the Niveus with the ati-remote modules... but I had to recompile it with product ID 0x005 instead of the default 0x004. This seems to work.

Happy remoting!

BTW, the niveus is a universal remote with an IR emitter and RF TX.

I've been reading the lirc mailing list archive. seems that the 250/350 receiver can cause issues w/ other remotes.

Of course this was after I got an RCA univeral remote (only $10). Guess I may need a new reciever too.

Is this correct:

    - Make or buy a serial reciever ($10 - $15)
    - hangit off the serial port
    - remove my 250's dongle receiver
    - tell lirc to 'listen' to the serial receiver ------ how is this done
Question 1)

Now, since my current lirc config works with my 250's grey remote, the grey remote should work with the serial, right???

Question 2)

To get a different remote to work (my RCA) I do the following:
    - set the vcr code on the universal remote to a config that uses lots of buttons
    - use irrecord to create a new lircd.conf

    - Do I need to recompile lirc here or just restart lirc?

thanx
