Post subject:  Radoen 9600Pro, and Studio PCTV Pro remote

My Radeon 9600pro comes up in VESA mode (though I think I can just
fix the driver to use the radeon). I'm also not convinced my remote that
came with Studio PCTV Pro is working. Is there a test program I can use
to see if it's working.

Other than having done three installs (Didn't like the onboard audio
of my SGI M330D motherboard, or my Aureal Vortex 2, and finally
settling on a SB 5.1) and just playing around. Figured out that I
had to set my /etc/wgetrc so I could go through my squid proxy in
my office through the wifi link to get my menus. This is pretty cool.
I was able to capture some video last night, though no sound but i"ll
figure that out.

Should I be doing an apg-get update/upgrade at some point?

The remote will not work "out of the box" you'll have to look at lirc and possibly recompile it for your remote. It is setup by default to work with the hauppage grey remote.

the sound probably means either 1( you don't have the tvcapture card audio patched to line in or 2( your settings are wrong in alsamixer. you need to set line in as capture and mute it.

On the R4 and prior releases never run apt-get upgrade it will completely hose the system.

Can you tell me what "hose" the system means?

I did the upgrade before I saw your response, so I'm stuck with it til I reload. Here's what I notice:

1) the bttv driver support definitely seems better
2) even after reloading the database, nothing appears to be there, so I'm pretty sure that something is really broke there, or the upgrade may have borked something there, that might be an easy fix.

Anyone have a suggestion for a cheap NVidia card. Given that this thing runs at 1024x768, I don't see a reason to plop down a bunch of bucks for a 64-256MB card. Something with decent performance. I've got a Nvidia GTS-V, which may work, but I have to put a new heatsink on it. The ATI without Xv support was pretty lame.

for nvidia I would suggest the fx5200 cause they are cheap and you can get them fanless with svid dvi and vga outputs.

Well for you to even have finished the apt-get upgrade you must have had to force a TON of stuff. As for hose the system, I'm not sure exactly all the problems people have, I just know I haven't heard of anyone making it work and everyone has had to reinstall.

Not really. I did a bunch of hacking on Morphix a year ago, so I just did a apt-get update, followed by an apt-get upgrade (maybe I used the --force flag), and had to check about 20 files for conflicts. All in all, less painful than I expected, and at least now the 9600 board is better supported under X.

I'll look into an FX5200. Thanks
