I'd like to purchase an MX440 card (which seems to be the most popular for Myth installations). The problem I'm running into is that my motherboard only has support for AGP version 1.0. It can run at either 1x or 2x speeds, but I believe the bus voltage is 3.3V. Almost all the cards on the market today seem to be 8x, which I've been told can be incompatible with the older bus versions.

Has anyone had any experience with an MX440 on an older system like this? Any suggested models or brands to consider? Thanks!

Ken

I didn't hear back from anyone so I did the best homework I could, rolled the dice, and purchased a card. I got a Pine XFX MX440-SE, model PV-T17L-DTH6. It is a 4x AGP card with a univeral connector. Long story short: It works fine!

It plugged in and booted without any major issues. I then downloaded and installed yanc for configuring the TV-out port. I set it to work as a dual monitor system (follow the instructions on yanc.sourceforge.net).

Two minor issues I encountered:

1) At boot-up I got an error saying that the console video mode was incompatible with my card. It then gave me a list of console video modes to choose from. I chose option 0 (for the bigest font) so I could read the text on my TV. To permanently set this mode, do the following as root:

#cd /etc
#xedit lilo.conf

Hit cntrl-r and search for vga. Comment out that line and add:
vga=0

Save it and exit. Then type and enter the following command:
#lilo

Reboot. Problem solved!

2) My video displayed in black and white on the TV. I finally figured out that I needed to explicitly set the 2nd Monitor output to Composite within yanc even though it was connected to my tv using the s-video port. I am using an s-video to composite adapter, so maybe that is why.

I haven't tried the 3D portion of the card, which, from the postings I've read is where the AGP 1.0 systems may fall apart. I'm not planning on using it for gaming, so I'm all set!

yes the converter is why you had to specify composite. svideo seperates b/w and color where composite puts everything together.
