Post subject: PCI vs USB tuner?

Couple quick questions.

I’d like to add an additional tuner but I’m all out of PCI slots. One is being taken up by a network card as my onboard network failed. Would I be better off replacing the nic with a USB nic and adding a PCI tuner or just getting a USB tuner? I was thinking of a Twinhan 1020A DVB-S, but they also have a USB StarBox. Any idea which is more compatible/trouble free with Knoppmyth?

Thanks in advance.

I have used a USB NIC in the past and it worked fine. I don't
remember setting it up, so it must have worked right out of
the box.

But... If you have an old motherboard, you may only have USB
1.1 (12 mbps, generally much less though) which would be
alright if you are not transferring video files around on it. I
personally would not use a USB 1.1 NIC because I have
non-integrated frontends that have to be served via the
network.

If you have USB 2.0 to plug the NIC in and it is a NIC rated at
at least 100 mbps you can expect to get that speed which is
fine.

I think I would base my decision on which new tuner I wanted
more.

I have 4 USB tuners in my system and they work fine. They are 2x "DigitalNow TinyUSB 2 DVB-t" and 2x "DigitalRise DVB-T USB 2.0 Ter Beetle" which are both clones of a Twinhan DVB-T tuner.

Don't forget the 3rd option: HDHomeRun. It connects via ethernet, and adds two tuners to your rig.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the HD Homerun does not work with European DVB standards. It's only for the North American market.
