hello, Ive been having problems getting video out to work properly with My Xpert LCD card. It works fine when the BIOS is loading and when the kernel is loading, just gets really screwed up when it loads up X. I edited the refresh rates for TV use like it says in the manual so im not sure whats wrong, any help would be appreciated

There is a program atitvout which may work for you. I don't have an ATI card so I cannot offer any more advice.

Try the Gatos project on Sourceforge. They provide tweaked ati drivers for linux so that they work properly with Xv and with TV-Out.

I tried atitvout with no luck, forgot about the GATOS project. I guess i will give that try. thanks for the suggestions

I reconfigured the Xserver to use the vesa driver and all is well now. so anyone having problems with TVout might want to try this aproach

I tried both the Vesa and Frame Buffer methods; both methods provide false hope. You'll soon find that you'll not be able to watch TV or your fav. movies as the performance is simply to low...

I found myself only able to get about 15 - 18 frames per second, which is no good.

I ended up getting a new nVidia card for $55 and have been "fairly" happy with it, though the TV out quality is much lower...

Just curious what are people expecting of the tvout quality? I would say my nvidia is just a hair off from the picture that I get straight from my digital box. I guess I'm just at a loss for what people are wanting? Is everyone wanting it to look like hdtv just cause it came from a computer?

The problem is not a lack of quality, it's a lack of performance.

The ATI cards only seem to put out between 10 - 20 frames per second. To look have decent you need at least 25 - 30 frames per second.

This is the line I was refering to.

All I expect is that Nvidia with there "linux strategy" could at least provide flicker reduction in there driver... There windows version has had it for years... hehe

ahh ok so that's what I'm not seeing as posted in the other thread I've never experianced flicker on my setup. I find it interesting that the two people in the other thread getting flicker ar both on 440 cards. I wonder if they goofed something up on those cards, I haven't had flicker on my onboard nforce2 (4mx equivelant?) and I don't remember it on my gforce2mx that I used for a short while before I had the nforce mb.

The thing that adds to my frustration is the fact that the Nvidia windows drivers have "Flicker" reduction options, that I've tried and found worked really well..

If they were exposed to the linux world, the problem would no longer be a problem.
