Hi, I've just done the upgrade to 6.04 and although everything seemed to go smoothly I noticed that mythfrontend does not automatically start when the mythtv box has booted up.

Everything else seems to be fine, mythbackend starts properly and can connect to the database, and in fact if I run mythfrontend as my 'mythtv' user it works as it should.

When I do a 'sv start mythfrontend' I get a "fail: mythfrontend: unable to change to service directory: file does not exist". I've looked in /var/service and sure enough there is no mythfrontend. I've tried "add_service.sh mythfrontend" but get an error "couldn't find /etc/sv/mythfrontend".

Could someone please guide me on how I might add the mythfrontend service back?

Thanks,
Jamie

IIRC the frontend isn't started as a service it's started by the fluxbox window manager when mythtv is auto logged in.

Check /home/mythtv/.fluxbox/apps which looks like this on my machine:
Code:
[root@black3 mythtv]# cat /home/mythtv/.fluxbox/apps
#Uncomment below if you are using firewire
#[startup] {/usr/bin/plugctl -n 0 "oPCR[0].n_p2pconnections=1"}
[startup] {feh --bg-scale ~/.fluxbox/wallpaper.png}
[startup] {/usr/LH/bin/LinHES-run}

The /usr/LH/bin/LinHES-run script is what starts the frontend.

The frontend is not a daemon (as tjc said), and the backend is.

Mythtv works as a server, with the backend running all the time (as a daemon) and the frontend as a simple application which connects to it then displays or controls the backend. One reason for this is simple: The daemon needs to run all the time and the frontend is flaky at the best of times. You will find that the backend almost never crashes, but the frontend... your experience will complete this line :-)

One of my friends' box (KM5.5) is doing the same thing as yours. Rather than find out why it doesn't start, I told him the keyboard shortcut (alt+m). His machine only gets about three restarts a year, so it's not worth fixing.

Mike
