I am in the process of moving to a separate frontend/backend myth setup. Having never done this before I'm not sure what I should see on the backend only system.

I had to use the 7.00.03 testing iso, as older versions had issues getting the network going on my new hardware. Install was seamless, but all that happens is that the backend boots up with the runit service messages on a tty. Is that right? Is that all I should see?

I'm happy enough, since mythbackend is running. I was just expecting to see an X display with the option of launching mythtv-setup, so some confirmation that all is OK would be nice!

you could also make the backend a masterbackend with a frontend. You would still be able to access it from the standalone Frontend and you would have a frontend interface on the backend.

Yep, that makes sense. Reading between the lines you're saying that I shouldn't expect any X interface unless I ask for a frontend?

I'm not intending to have the machine connected to a display, so it really doesn't make sense for me to have X running. As long as I can ssh in (ssh -Y ideally), then I'm set.

bigtoedsloth, what your seeing is expected. A systems installed as backend only will not start X, unless the checkbox to run the frontend was also selected.

Cheers jams.
Apart from a couple of minor issues (locale wasn't set and I needed to modify the sshd_config to allow ssh -Y) 7.00.03 is working like a charm.

Hi

As a tip with '.03, It works best when upgrading from R6.04. Set up everything in .04, do a LinHES backup. As a straight install there are no settings for transcoders.
Also copy these files:

cp /usr/bin/mencoder /myth/archive
cp /usr/lib/libx264.so.67 /myth/archive
There are others but I don't know if they are used.
cp /usr/lib/libx264* /myth/archive
would get them all.

Then do upgrade with the new R7 and when it is complete, copy the two saved files back as they aren't there with the install. Transcode to h264 will now work.

At this point you can add users and set mythtv password. The home folder isn't backed up, probably only the mythtv part..

I would also suggest a full .03 system setting. The frontend can always be stopped if resources are thin and it causes a performance hit.

Thanks
Mike
