So I screwed up my 7.2 setup. I was trying to get my rig to restart x with ctrl-alt-bkspace like the old days. So I attempted to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf per one of the forums. Now when I reboot, the backend will start (as evidenced by mythweb), but my system wont login and start the front end. Instead I get an error message stating

Code:
Python Backend Connection: Couldn't connect to backend 192.168.0.7:6453 Couldn't connect to MythTV service for Status

When rebooting, I can get to the point where it asks me to login, when choosing the linhes-nologin option. The problem is, I cannot find what the default login should be. I tried every combination of defaults I could think of. I did not set a password at the time of install. I know 'a' used to be the old default password for R6, but that is not working either. Not entering a password also does not work.

This has been covered before, but I havent been able to pull up anything useful due to the broken forum links.

Not sure what the problem is, it could be an incorrect login name, password or both.

Any tips would be great. It would be awesome not to have to reinstall for such a silly reason as this.

i had a very similar issue (same error message). I searched for a cause and solution to no avail... I finally reinstalled 7.2 but this time I chose "upgrade" and then chose "do not format" (not sure of the exact wording). Anyway, 10 minutes later I was back up and running. I had to do a couple of things... after the install completed I had to reset root password (sudo passwd from a command prompt); then renamed /etc to something else (/etc.new), then renamed /etc.old to /etc.

I have been running for a week with no other issues. I would suggest the first thing you should try is to reset root password and see if you can get in. If not then perhaps a reinstall... Good luck.

That sounds like an option thanks for sharing. Out of curiosity, did it create duplicates of all the system folders, like /usr/, /var/, and /home/, or did it only create a new /etc/ folder? If it is just the /etc/ folder then that should be simple enough.

Since I know what file I need to edit in the X11 folder, you got me thinking that I might be able to gain access to the file if I put the install disk in and choose frontend only.... I will give that a shot.

If all you need to do is edit that one file then you can just boot from the 7.2 CD or (as I always recommend) make yourself an archlive CD (or USB stick) and boot from there.

It only creates /etc and a couple of other minor folders (like alsa if you have one to begin with). I always backup several key folders before I do anything to my systems - /etc being the most important and any others where you may have changed data.

A couple of things I should add - you may want to grab pacman.conf from /etc.new (or whatever you named it). You will want to do a pacman -Syu once finished and if you get a message that says it cant find the libraries then replace /etc/pacman.conf with the one you grabbed from /etc.new...
