Post subject:  XFS formated /myth partition - manually run disk check?

I have an XFS formated /myth partition. Under R5.5, users needed to manually umount, check, and remount their xfs partitions (see this thread for a howto), I noticed that the R6 installer flagged my XFS /myth partition to be checked with my / partition. (You'll see this if you look in the /etc/fstab that R6 generates). My question: is this a bug or does R6 have XFS checks automated? My understanding is that fsck cannot and should not be used! One should use the built-in xfs_repair util.

Please advise.

Well, I forced a disk check (touch /forcefsck as root) and rebooted. My /dev/sda1 got checked (it's ext4) but my /dev/sda3 did not (it's XFS). Seems as though a line flew by saying something about check.xfs but it didn't appear to do any check. If one umounts /dev/sda3 and runs the xfs_repair util, that process takes a good 15 sec to complete. Since the line flew by faster than that, I'm assuming that no check took place.

I modified my /etc/fstab entry for /dev/sda3 to read
Code:
/dev/sda3   /myth   xfs   defaults,allocsize=512m   0   0

The R6 installer had it flagged as "0 1" meaning it would get checked in the same round as my root filesystem.

Is XFS still recommended for the fs on a second drive /myth2 partition ?

Or is ext4 the way to go for that now ?

Depends on what you want. I'd stick w/ ext4 were I you.

Thanks.

I had used XFS (per the wiki semi recommendation) [on the /myth2 drives] without any problems or provable performance gains... on two boxes each running two drives.

I had also read somewhere that XFS needed some manual fsk maintenance, that I've never done... with no provable consequences so far [knock on wood] ....

& I had further read that ext4 had less overhead with the journaling, so might be the way to go now...

I am up for replacing a 500gb second drive with a 1tb, just for the halibut, and think ext4 is what I'll try on that one !
