I just tried playing one of my mpg files captured from a PVR-250 over the samba share of /myth/pretty (or /myth/tv it doesn't matter). Basically, the files do not play! They did under R5.5. I'm using VLC on Linux to try to view them but have also confirmed that this doesn't work on the wife's laptop (Max OS) and on a friend's windows xp machine also using mplayer, VLC, and the built in windows media player.

Symptom: only several frames of the video are displayed in the player, then the player just freezes. Tested with vlc, mplayer, and whatever the macos uses. This is via the samba share. That said, I can play them just fine on my FE machine!

I get the same problem if I try to view the mpg files in any player on my desktop machine from an NFS share too so the problem isn't with samba.

This worked perfectly under R5.5 (same hardware). Can others give this a try and report back? Suggestions as to what I can try to fix this?

Here's a link to a screenshot/video of what happens when I just drag-and-drop a video over either the samba share, or the nfs share:

Working for me on mpg files recorded from an HVR-1600 and on the H.264 files from an HD-PVR.

The only thing I can think of off hand is a permissions and /or remote access issue, since in another thread you mentioned something else of this sort. That's totally a wild guess though.

Oh - just to make sure we haven't ignored the obvious - did you try restarting smbd (or rebooting)?

The permissions are fine, in fact I can copy the mpg files to my local disk and they play just fine. The problem seems to be related to playing them directly from the mythtv share (samba). Also, yes, I have been restarting smbd whenever I made a change to a config file.

This is really a drag :( Does anyone have any suggestions? Glad to post log files, etc.

I'm not sure how to go about testing this or even what settings to tweak and how to tweak them. I can play any captured video just fine on my FE machine (through the mythtv interface) that doesn't use the samba share. I think it's using NFS or..? Point is, the files are fine and this problem seems to be isolated to the samba share.

UPDATE (also updated the first post of the thread): this problem is present on NFS shares as well! I connected via NFS to the R6 box from my Arch box and the same symptoms are present, so it's not just a samba thing :(

Three things come to mind:
- duplicate IP addresses. run ifconfig everywhere and make sure the IP's (inet addr:) are different.
- duplicate MAC address on the network. not typical. you would have to force a MAC address to some other value. this can happen though with some really dumb BIOS updates. If you have two of the same motherboard on the network and updated both their BIOSes, you may have duplicate MAC addresses. ifconfig will tell you this too (HWAddr)
- some network cards / drivers have problems with autodetecting speed and duplex settings.

@cliff - checked all three. No duplicates (IP or MACs). Speed and duplux are correctly selected. I have no idea why R5.5 has no issues w/ this but R6 seems to :(

graysky: post your smb.conf. I'm by no means a samba expert (I've used it sparingly), but maybe we (the community collectively) may spot something that may be amisss.

I see the same thing on any file in /myth/pretty but the files in /myth/tv work just fine. I thought it might be a symbolic link issue since that is what everything in pretty is. I am connected via SMB and have seen this on Macs and XP boxes.

It's more or less the R6-out-of-the-box file, I just added the "socket options = TCP_NODELAY" option. I can also verify that the problem is present with or without that line. The kick in the balls is that it's not just samba, it's also NFS so to me, that's pointing the blame away from samba. Network drivers/config? I/O scheduler?

Here is the file you asked about:

Code:
$ cat /etc/samba/smb.conf
#
#======================= Global Settings =====================================
[global]

workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = mythtv
socket options = TCP_NODELAY

# Security mode. Defines in which mode Samba will operate. Possible
# values are share, user, server, domain and ads. Most people will want
# user level security. See the Samba-HOWTO-Collection for details.
   security = share

# This option is important for security. It allows you to restrict
# connections to machines which are on your local network. The
# following example restricts access to two C class networks and
# the "loopback" interface. For more examples of the syntax see
# the smb.conf man page
   hosts allow = 192.168.0. 127.

   load printers = no

# you may wish to override the location of the printcap file
;   printcap name = /etc/printcap

;  guest account = pcguest

# this tells Samba to use a separate log file for each machine
# that connects
   log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m

# Put a capping on the size of the log files (in Kb).
   max log size = 50

# Use password server option only with security = server
# The argument list may include:
#   password server = My_PDC_Name [My_BDC_Name] [My_Next_BDC_Name]
# or to auto-locate the domain controller/s
#   password server = *
;   password server = <NT-Server-Name>

# Use the realm option only with security = ads
# Specifies the Active Directory realm the host is part of
;   realm = MY_REALM

# Backend to store user information in. New installations should
# use either tdbsam or ldapsam. smbpasswd is available for backwards
# compatibility. tdbsam requires no further configuration.
;   passdb backend = tdbsam

# Using the following line enables you to customise your configuration
# on a per machine basis. The %m gets replaced with the netbios name
# of the machine that is connecting.
# Note: Consider carefully the location in the configuration file of
#       this line.  The included file is read at that point.
;   include = /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf.%m

# Configure Samba to use multiple interfaces
# If you have multiple network interfaces then you must list them
# here. See the man page for details.

# set local master to no if you don't want Samba to become a master
# browser on your network. Otherwise the normal election rules apply

# OS Level determines the precedence of this server in master browser
# elections. The default value should be reasonable

# Domain Master specifies Samba to be the Domain Master Browser. This

;   logon script = %U.bat

Just noticed that the same thing is true streaming in mythweb :( Here's a link to a screenshot/video of what happens when I just drag-and-drop a video over either the samba share, or the nfs share (I also edited the first post with it):

Have a look in the last post of this therad/. This problem was caused by the way R6 sets the mtu size.

graysky, are you saying changing your mtu fixed this problem for you? I have only 100mb ethernet so I can't change the mtu above 1500.
