Post subject:  nvidia legacy driver

While setting up my diskless front end, i cant get X to start.

messages.log reports that it doesnt like the nvidia 190.53 driver. It says that the NVIDIA GEForce FX Go5200 GPU is supported by the Nvidia 173.14.xx Legacy driver.

I tried pacman -S nvidia-173xx
but is says not found in sync db.

How can I downgrade this driver?

reviewing /etc/pacman.d/mirror.list shows a mirror exists at this site:

http://unix.net.pl/archlinux.org/extra/os/i686/

you can do a wget http://unix.net.pl/archlinux.org/extra/ ... pkg.tar.gz

to get it and a pacman -U nvidia-173xx-173.14.25-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

assuming you dont want to repoint your pacman config to this polish server

Thanks welner but as is often the case with using pacman outside of the Linhes repos, it had some dependencies that were not available. I wound up getting a hard disk for my "diskless" frontend and ran a fresh install. It found the right drivers and worked fine.

For information purposes, how did you find the location of this file? Is there a special search for arch repo packages?

i looked in the mirrors list shown in the pacman.conf file, picked one or two at random and checked to see if the legacy driver was there. i guess i've been lucky looking for 'non standard' packages this way, the one or two i needed did not have other dependencies. i guess one could actually point pacman to the mirrors, but i am hesitant to go astray from the repository maintained for the purposes of linhes.

You shouldn't use an nvidia package outside of our repo. The nvidia module needs to be compiled against our kernel.
