G'day,

The last issue I have since my upgrade to R6 is I don't seem to be able to get 5.1 sound out to my amp.
I had horrendous problems with this on an early version of myth, but all the way up to R5.5 it has worked fine. I assume it is do with the change of architecture that is causing the problem.
Anybody got any suggestions I things I might try?
Searching the forum yields many thing none of which seem to work.

Code:
[root@mythtv etc]# aplay -L
default:CARD=Live
    SBLive 5.1 [SB0060], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
    Default Audio Device
front:CARD=Live,DEV=0
    SBLive 5.1 [SB0060], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
    Front speakers
rear:CARD=Live,DEV=0
    SBLive 5.1 [SB0060], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
    Rear speakers
center_lfe:CARD=Live,DEV=0
    SBLive 5.1 [SB0060], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
    Center and Subwoofer speakers
surround40:CARD=Live,DEV=0
    SBLive 5.1 [SB0060], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=Live,DEV=0
    SBLive 5.1 [SB0060], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=Live,DEV=0
    SBLive 5.1 [SB0060], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=Live,DEV=0
    SBLive 5.1 [SB0060], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
iec958:CARD=Live,DEV=0
    SBLive 5.1 [SB0060], Multichannel Capture/PT Playback
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

I think I need to enable pass through somehow.

solved
I upgraded to 6.03

Are you using spdif out? I am using an optical cable which works great, so I will check my settings tonight and let you know what they are. Are you getting any through the spdif?

If it's stuttering I will assume the light is going through the cable.

In alsaplayer press F6 to select the appropriate device. Mine was set to mute as default (MM). Press m to un-mute.

front:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, AD198x Analog
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, AD198x Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, AD198x Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, AD198x Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, AD198x Analog

iec958:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0
    HDA NVidia, AD198x Digital

In alsamixer S/PDIF and S/PDIF D are unmuted, Master, PCM, and Surround are 100, everything else is muted. Channel is set to 2.

I have discovered that I am getting sound out through the coax to the amp but it is not 5.1, so I am I correct in thinking it has something to do with "pass through"?

I would guess so. I think getting the sound working through the coaxial is an alsamixer setting, but the passthrough stuff is a setting in mythtv somewhere. You may want to hunt through the mythtv setup menus. I can't tell you specifically where because I'm going to be away from my box for a few days.

Or you could try a DVD or something with 5.1 sound through xine or mplayer to confirm that the passthrough is working in general before you tackle it in mythtv.

A quick test on xine shows the same issue.

Sound is there but not 5.1.

Does anybody know what the setting are?
On my R5.5 and earlier, I could use xine to play MPG file and get sound out over the the non coax feed, so normal sound to the TV. If I played a dvd I would get 5.1 sound, I don't seem to be able to do that now.
There must be a setting file that determines what sound goes where.

Do you have the Dolby Digital and or DTS boxes checked in the mythtv general settings?
It was really a pain in the but to get mine finally working http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... ight=spdif
The important bit is that if you make changes to audio alsa or oss in the LinHES menu reboot the computer or else they won't take effect. For me it was a lot of just trial and error until I got it right then I posted my results on here so that the next time I botch the system I can find it agian :-D .
