I finally set up Mythmusic to be my music server for my whole house audio system and after a month I still dont like it. I find it hard to use and more importnantly (at least for me) there is no way to control music play if you are not in the room with the myth FE.

Do some searching I found that MPD which looked interesting and even better I found it in the LINHES repo. I assume that this includes the client as well as the server because I still want to output the music from my FE.

Is anyone using MPD and are you happy with it. I see there are apps available (such as MPDroid) that provide streaming from the MPD server. Will these apps allow me to control a client on my LINHES FE while not near my FE?

I highly suggest that you take a look at Subsonic. It's Java based and therefore easy to install on just about anything. You can set it up for local mode or Jukebox mode. It also has iOS and Android apps although you need to make a donation (10 pounds) to unlock the server to use the iOS and Android apps past 30 days (well worth the money for me).

Subsonic allows me to stream my entire music collection (50 GB+) to any internet connected PC (via a simple webpage - no software install required), to my wife's iPod, to my Android Phone, and also allows me to manage / play music on my receiver hooked up to my myth box via a web page without even turning on the TV.

EDIT: It also has playlist support and the playlists are stored server side - meaning I can set up a playlist at work, access the same playlist on my phone for the drive home, and then have the same playlist on the stereo when I get home.

@Martian,
I see their website and it looks interesting. I wouldn't mind giving it a shot but I have no idea how to start. Any chance for you to give me a quick "how to"?

I just grabbed the PKGBUILD and files from AUR and use "makepkg". Here is the link to Subsonic in AUR:

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=35954

The only dependency is "jre" (java) which is in the LinHES repos.

Or if you prefer the super easy method you can download and install my already built package:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6XKIDYH2
(sorry for the megaupload link - didn't have anywhere else to upload it)

to install:
Code:
sudo pacman -U subsonic-4.3-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz

Then to start it just run:
Code:
sudo subsonic

Access it via mythip:4040

I have to admit that I chickened out, at least for now.

Having just got Mythmusic going and introducing this "new technology" to the family, the WAF has been fairly low. So I took another look at the subsonic webpage to see the usability of it from within Myth but it seems that there is no way to control this from a lirc remote. Getting the wife to control music from the PC is going to be a challenge so... I decided to leave MythMusic as it is for now and hopefully get her hooked on that.

Now that I am writing this however it occurs to me that I could probably have both Mythmusic (for her) and Subsonic for me.

Exactly!!! This in no way, shape, or form, affects MythMusic (well, unless you totally fubar it)

I'm interested in installing this, but am currently jumped the gun and running R7. I need to grab the base development tools, but the repositories in pacman.conf are point to local files.

1. Is it suicidal to be trying this (risks understood, settings backups made ready for an install from disc)

2. If not, what repositories should core-testing and extra-testing be set to in order to grab files from the outside world?

So long as jre is available you will be fine. It is the only dependancy for Subsonic. You will of course need to build the subsonic package from AUR on an R7 system.

I would gladly do it for you but I don't have an R7 system (yet).

At the moment I don't even have the base-dev (from memory) to compile things. When I tried to grab it with pacman it found nada, leading me to find 2 of 3 of the repositories pointing to file:// type addresses in pacman.conf (presumably for testing - the part where jumping the gun on R7 stings me ;)

Thanks for the lead on the AUR - I'll check that out and see how far I get!

Assuming you can get jre installed you can always try the prebuilt package I linked in my first post. the worst it can do is fail but there is a decent chance it will work.

Yep - can't get JRE installed even.

Beginning to feel really out of my depth.

[root@lounge mythtv]# pacman -S jre
error: 'jre': could not find or read package

[root@lounge mythtv]# pacman -Sy
:: Synchronizing package databases...
error: failed retrieving file 'larch.db.tar.gz' from ftp.archlinux.org : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
error: failed retrieving file 'larch.db.tar.gz' from ftp.archlinux.org : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
error: failed to update larch (File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access))
error: failed to synchronize any databases

Same error when using any of the following respositories:
Server = http://knoppmyth.net/repo/larch/larch8/i686/
Server = http://linhes.org/repo/larch/larch8/i686
Server = ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/extra/os/i686
Server = ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/community/os/i686
Server = ftp://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/archl ... ra/os/i686
Server = ftp://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/archl ... ty/os/i686

For the record, unless I'm missing something, Subsonic isn't in the Arch Package Database, so I'll have to drop back to something more manual like you've suggested.
[edit] I did indeed miss it - it's there.

While I can't even grab jre, I'm sure there's bigger things amiss though.

i gave subsonic a try over the weekend. it is proving to be the solution i was looking for and required little effort to get going. after recently converting all of my audio cd's into mythmusic in the flac format, i started trying to get audio streaming working with lighttpd. i then discovered that not all client players supported flac format, which made actually playing the streams problematic.

subsonic resolved all of those issues. the only change i had to make was to create links to ffmpeg and lame in the subsonic 'transcode' directory.

the open source software is also a little interesting (at least in my experience) in that it becomes feature locked after 30 days.
