I am contemplating installing Asterisk on LinHES 6.02. Has anyone had any success and lessons learned from installing Asterisk on LinHES? I only plan to use two Jabber \ XMPP channels on Asterisk. |

G'day, I would say... don't! Mythtv is pretty resource hungry and so is Asterisk |

Not sure what you are planning to use Asterisk for, but if you're looking to use it for VOIP calling, consider the OBI110. I use mine with Google Voice -- works like a champ. Supports many other VOIP services and is highly configurable. I think it is running Asterisk, but I can't be certain about that... |

Thanks for the suggestion. Does the Obi support the G729 codec? I have heard that the Obi has significantly lowered the learning curve for JABBER / XMPP (GV) VOIP calling. Hopefully Google will continue to keep the service free and fund it with the long distance toll calls. I use GV for overseas long distance in the hope that they will continue to keep US \ CA calling free. I currently have * running on my DD-WRT \ optware router: a good learning experience. I thought it would be nice to shift the load to LinHES because, LinHES uses less than 15% of CPU resources while recording. I would imagine that transcoding hammers the CPU, however, I don't use this feature, though I probably should becaue 30 min of SD TV is 1GB. Because my DSL bandwidth only 120 Kilobits per sec, I like prefer to use the G729 codec, which uses half the bandwidh of the more prevelant 711, found in most applications. |

Based on this thread I think it does support G729, but best to double check. In terms of compressing -- given how cheap disk space is these days I would not bother compressing if you are recording at 2GB/hour -- while the quality is quite good, there is typically some quality loss and you can pick up a 2TB drive for $80 when they go n sale... |
