Post subject:  Request Feedback: Remote Architecture Overview

Folks,
I have taken a first crack at documenting the architecture related to Remote controls, drivers, lirc, and associated tools.

This is literally my first pass and I have yet to reread myself but I'm open to input. I learned this on the fly last week when setting up my various front ends. Every frontend was an adventure! Once it is in good shape, others can start to add what they know beyond what I have discussed. In the mean time, feel free to comment in this thread.

It is in the wiki under Guides->Remotes->Architecture and Customization

direct link: http://linhes.org/projects/linhes/wiki/ ... tomization

I hope this helps others.

Looks great, you've set the bar very high for the wiki.

Much appreciated. I'm just doing my part which is minor compared to the devs. I figure if we each document something that we have taken the time to understand then it benefits the whole community to share our knowledge.

Very nice, Christ!
Can I ask, what did you use to create the Architecture diagram? You've done a professional job.

Thanks. Powerpoint I'm afraid; it was what I had handy though you could easily use OpenOffice Impress. I then saved the diagram as an image and then scaled the image down to fit.

That's actually quick and dirty for me as I tend to do a lot of PPT in my job. I uploaded the source PPT in case people need to make future edits on the diagram and I kept it simple for portability. You'll see it at the end of the wiki page. I still have a little tweaking to do. :)

I added a section on important files used with remotes.

I've added descriptions for the Legacy LIRC Remote Drivers. LinHES still supports those and the associated message path and tools are now documented.

Added ircat as part of the test tools. Also added mythtv config page reference for proper binding to the lirc socket.

This document is fantastic and a credit to you.

Good work.

Great stuff! The diagrams are amazing. You may also want to look at this old post that I recently dug up for Abby which covers key mapping details and see if it gives you any further ideas. http://forum.linhes.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15551

Thanks tjc, I took a quick look and it is worth incorporating in some manner. I will do so when I get a few cycles to my self again.

Could someone add what needs to be done if MythVantage doesn't support your customisations. I had to modify my /etc/lircrc and /etc/lircd.conf but then a pacman update replace my change and I had to restore the previous versions.

For example I added another line to lircd.conf so that I could use the irblaster to control my TV:
Code:
include "/usr/MythVantage/templates/remotes/mceusb/lircd.conf.mceusb"
include "/root/Loewe_150_TV.lircd.conf"

I also modified my lircrc to add the commands for the irblaster:
Code:
################################### irexec ###################################
# the lirc irexec program must be running for this section

# Send a signal to the Loewe tv to power on or off
begin
       prog   = irexec
       button = Power
       config = /home/mythtv/mythpowerbutton.sh
end

How would a user preserve such customisations?

The Architecture page is a sub page of the wiki entry brfransen pointed out. The Architecture page also points back to this page under the section "LIRC" when referring to the need to customize.
