That mythfrontend had some interesting stuff at the end so I included a truncated version of it

:::: LONG VERSION ::::
OK lightning struck very near my house. It zapped my cable modem and the NICs on my computers (windows and LinHES). I bought two NICs (hard to find locally now days) and have confirmed that my router is still working on the LAN but I can't check the WAN port till BrightHouse fixes their equipment this afternoon.
Lightning struck at about 7:40 PM Thursday I was watching LinHES for a good 30 seconds after the strike until I got the "cannot connect to the backend." warning I figured I needed to reset my network so I did and rebooted MythTV. I got MythTV to reboot at 8:30 PM still no backend I tried changing the backend address to 127.0.0.1 from 192.168.0.164 (I don't know why I did that, I hadn't learned the extent of the damage yet) then I tried to re-boot and X wouldn't start after that.
After the strike I was dealing with a lot of issues My AC compressor stopped working for a while a GFI in the kitchen was knocked out that took out the power in my computer room (old house the wiring is interesting) My amplifier that I use with MythTV went into some strange protect mode where there was no audio and it wouldn't turn off. I had to unplug it from the outlet and plug it back in it works now (as far as I can tell). Amazingly HDHR didn't get zapped I'm not sure about my Blu-Ray player (the only other thing on the network). All in all I lucked out my computers still work (mostly) and there was no major damage.

A lightning strike could easily fry your computer. Get a UPS backup battery for your main box. Also use power surge strips for all your electronics. Keep is mind that all your outlets need to be grounded or power strips are pretty worthless.....

How about this if I do an upgrade from my broken system to 7.x will the X problems magically disappear or will they follow me like zombie dog?

I'm running 6.03
and I have some good--ish news
I was able to run startx from the command line I even tried startx --logverbose 6 2> /tmp/startx.log
I was able to get Mythtv up all I could see was the top left corner of MythTV and though several guesses as to where the cursor was and restarts I was able to get MythTV back to a place where I could see the whole menu!!!!!
Unfortunately X still doesn't start on it's own I have to alt F2 log into the command line and type startx
WTFudge man. One of my projects was to finally upgrade to 7.4 am I safe to do that now?

I changed MythVantage without internet and I also had X fail I wonder if they are related?
In my case I changed the IP of the backend from 192.168.0.160 to Localhost and then rebooted to no X.

I wish I had some suggestions for fixing your 6.03... I think you will be safe to upgrade but I would suggest you do a few things (besides confirming your backup...). You will have to upgrade to 7.02 from 6.03; then from 7.02 to 7.04. I think your life will be easier... Also, before you restore your database to 7.02, confirm the system works (tuners, X (of course)). Then backup THAT database before you restore. Good luck (7.02 to 7.04 is a very easy move).
