Not being a arch expert, how would I install smart.
I just had a disk fail and I think I might have got a warning if smarttools where installed.

i installed smart tools a while ago. i dont have the specifics handy, but you will need to use pacman to install smartmontools, if not already installed:

pacman -Ss smart
extra/smartmontools 5.41-1 [installed]
Control and monitor S.M.A.R.T. enabled ATA and SCSI Hard Drives.

i found this article helpful when configuring:

http://www.linuxjournal.com/magazine/mo ... isks-smart

it is also useful to install postfix so the monitoring software can email you when something goes wrong

G'day,

Yeah, I think that was already installed. smartctl does nor seem to be though.
I have sendmail installed, so I am good on that front.

smartctl is part of the smartmon package:

[root@mythtv ~]# pacman -Ql smartmontools
smartmontools /etc/
smartmontools /etc/rc.d/
smartmontools /etc/rc.d/smartd
smartmontools /etc/smartd.conf
smartmontools /usr/
smartmontools /usr/sbin/
smartmontools /usr/sbin/smartctl
smartmontools /usr/sbin/smartd
smartmontools /usr/sbin/update-smart-drivedb
smartmontools /usr/share/
smartmontools /usr/share/man/
smartmontools /usr/share/man/man5/
smartmontools /usr/share/man/man5/smartd.conf.5.gz
smartmontools /usr/share/man/man8/
smartmontools /usr/share/man/man8/smartctl.8.gz
smartmontools /usr/share/man/man8/smartd.8.gz
smartmontools /usr/share/smartmontools/
smartmontools /usr/share/smartmontools/drivedb.h

you can check to see if you have smartmon installed by doing:

[root@mythtv ~]# pacman -Ss smartmontools
extra/smartmontools 5.41-1 [installed]
Control and monitor S.M.A.R.T. enabled ATA and SCSI Hard Drives.

So to install, I would do
pacman -S smartmontools

Edit...
And it did, smartmontools installed.
Now I need to patch my disk firmware due to a bug and possibly some sort of log monitor.
