Hi,

I have two systems that are identically configured with R7.2 All the parameters appear to be the same. One automatically deletes recordings when disk capacity is reached and one does not. The "AutoExpireExtraSpace" is set to 10% of the disk (ie, 75GB for one and 50GB) for the other. Can anyone shed light on why this is happening? Why does one system run perfectly fine and the other keeps running out of disk? What can I do to fix it?

Thanks

There are many setting in mythtv, so without looking at the system one can only guess at things to look at. The first place I would look is at the attributes on each recording -- do they clearly show that they are allowed to "auto expire"?

I'd check

(Setup->TV Settings->General)

and compare the two systems

Then I'd check in Mythweb and see if you are to manually delete a show thru recorded shows

Another approach for looking at differences via mythweb is go to http://<server IP address>>/mythweb/settings/mythtv on both machines. Search for the word "expire" using your browser and see if they have different settings. I would not change anything from this screen, but looking around could give you an idea of what is different.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Here's what I've found.

marc.aronson: All the settings are identical on both machines when looking at the mythweb settings EXCEPT for something called "GlobalServiceHobbitserver". I don't know what that is and a search yielded nothing. The machine that expires the files correctly has this as a setting to "1". The machine that is not expiring files does not have this as an entry at all. Your other suggestion to see if the attributes are set correctly, I don't know how to do that. Any tips?

RacerX: I've checked all the setting and compared both machine the way you advised. Both are identical.

I'm at a loss and any additional tips would be appreciated.

Thanks!

GlobalServiceHobbitserver is unrelated to this topic, and in fact isn't used anymore by LinHES.
The setting can be removed, but it's harmless to leave it.

jams: Thanks for the response.

What can I provide that might be able to help me resolve this matter?

Thanks

In your frotend, goto recorded programs. Select a program. Hit the menu button. Select "Storage options". If it says "Enable auto expire", the recording has been set to never expire. If it says "disable auto expire", recordings can be cleaned up. If the misbehaved machine says "Enable auto expire", then the issue is the way you set up your recordings, and we have a hint of where to look next...

marc.aronson:

I checked the attributes on several recordings on the misbehaved machine and the recordings say "Disable Auto Expire". They also say the same thing on the well behaved machine.

For future newbies, here's a more detailed step on how to get to "storage options":

From the Main Menu, select "Media Library" --> "Watch Recordings" --> Then select a specific recording by hitting the "M" button --> select "Storage Options"

Now I'm ready for your next hint....

Thanks!

OK -- so we know that your setting tables are identical and your recording have the "auto expire me" bit set. I can only think of one more place to look -- have you checked the mythbackend logs? My memory is that the logs show something when they auto expire programs. I suggest looking in /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log on both machines. See if you can find some message showing that the misbehaved machine is complaining when it trys to autoexpire the programs. I don't know what to look for, but sometimes there are hints in the logs...

Thanks again! I too am not sure what to look for, but perhaps you or others can. I'll include the latest entries from the top of the most recent hour (11:00:00 am EST) (which seem to be duplicated a lot in each recorder) around where 'autoexpire' appears. Let me know if you need more data.

How about checking the permissions for

/myth/tv

is there any difference between the two?

Also if your possessed machine ran totally out of space it could have messed things up and Marc has the right idea that it's in the logs

RacerX:

Permissions on both machines in /myth/tv are set to "-rw-r-r--" As for looking in the log files, I'm not sure what I"m looking for. If you can point me in the right direction, I'll dig up the information.

This possessed machine has not run out of space in this iteration. It has run out of space in the past when I've forgotten to delete the files manually. I've installed and re-installed 7.2 on this machine several times thinking that I might have messed up something in the process, but the result is always the same. I'm beginning to wonder if the hardware makes a difference as they are not running on identical hardware.

I've even tried to install 7.4 and see if the same behavior occurs but I couldn't get past the setup screen for schedulesdirect.com. It keeps hanging up on that screen. I haven't tried to push on that issue because I am fairly happy with 7.2 and I'm not sure what 7.4 will add if I cant be sure that it WILL fix this problem.

Thanks for your response.

Behaved machine has this in the log:
Quote:
2013-02-22 11:03:43.411 AutoExpire: CalcParams(): Max required Free Space: 62.0 GB w/freq: 7 min

Misbehaved machine has this:
Quote:
2013-02-22 11:00:02.923 AutoExpire: CalcParams(): Max required Free Space: 252.0 GB w/freq: 7 min

62GB vs. 252GB. There's a difference.

Let me ask this: How much storage is on each machine for recordings (show the output of "df -h") and how much is currently in use on each machine?

Marc.aronson:

Yes, there is a difference that setting, but I did that on purpose to see if it matters. It really doesn't matter what that parameter is: it could be 50G or 200G. The misbehaved recorder will run it down to 0.

Here's the data on the storage for each machine:

Well behaved machine:

[root@rec-nc-64 ~]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
udev 10M 0 10M 0% /dev
run 10M 256K 9.8M 3% /run
/dev/disk/by-uuid/e11ab5c2-3561-4bb3-a579-b1df78b72fe5 4.9G 2.4G 2.3G 51% /
shm 1004M 0 1004M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda3 1.4T 1.3T 63G 96% /myth

-------------------

Misbehaved machine:
[root@rec-nc-62 ~]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
udev 10M 0 10M 0% /dev
run 10M 236K 9.8M 3% /run
/dev/disk/by-uuid/1f868c35-c574-4309-b1e1-93ed14a9a0f7 4.9G 2.1G 2.6G 45% /
shm 1004M 0 1004M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda3 452G 267G 163G 63% /myth

Thanks
