Shutting down everything is a good technique to try to narrow down the problem. Just try the Master and see if you have still have trouble. Additionally ANN and Mythproto are between boxes. When I upgraded to R8 I started with a limited test with just a Frontend. It worked properly with my R7 Master. But theoretically if an update doesn't work exactly (strangeness) then it can't establish ANN and Mythproto. The update path from R6/R7 was much longer compared to R8 which is sort of a clean start.
