I have had 8.3 running for a few weeks now without problems but last night, the remote stopped working, VNC stopped working and trying to watch a video led to an audio disabled message.

No idea what is going on but I am thinking of doing a full system restore from the CD and then restoring the database. Any advice before I proceed with this?

Before you do anything check this

Code:
cat /tmp/remotes.log

The remotes.log is full of
Code:
Notice: accepted new client on /var/run/lirc/lircd
Info: Removed client
Notice: accepted new client on /var/run/lirc/lircd
Info: Removed client

As I mentioned above though, VNC and audio are also not working so I am not sure it is just a lirc thing. Also, IRW is giving good responses.

Any suggestions.

I'm thinking that this is an issue for the developers that is sorta stalled

http://www.linhes.org/issues/920#note-17

It wouldn't be a bad idea run a test on fresh install and post the results

Just curious - look at the symbolic link in /etc/lirc/lircd.conf.d to see where it is pointing. I had a similar issue on several of my machines and discovered that link had been corrupted... It should be pointing to /etc/lircd.conf.

Also, look at the logs in /tmp/remotes.log for a clue.

Nothing seems out of the norm in the remotes.log or the sym link.

Considering that the problems are not limited to the remote, I am going to move ahead with a re-install of 8.3 tonight and see if that cleans things up. My plan is:

- Backup database and save to another computer for safe keeping. (all this can be done from the web page, correct?)
- Make a backup copy of fstab
- Backup /etc/x11vnc.cfg (custom options)
- Backup lircrc and etc/lircd.conf (custom options)
- Do a fresh install of 8.3 from the CD
- Restore the database from web page
- Repair fstab
- Restore custom vnc and lirc files
- Enjoy recordings

Anything seem out of line?

It's a lot easier to just to run a test on a spare drive (pay attention to the host name) and then test your remote . That way you can test the issue with a plain vanilla install. Also when I restored the database it did not work thru the webpage I had to run it from the command line but it worked fine...

Big boy stan, I agree with your earlier assessment that this doesn't seem to be lirc related. If it were lirc you would not be getting irw responses. So the problem is most likely at another level.

Which vnc? X11vnc? Check /var/log/vnc.log
For the audio issues do you have audio in other applications outside myth? Is there anything of note in the mythfrontend and mythbackend logs?

A couple more logs to investigate: /var/log/boot, /var/log/$DATE/$HOST_messages.log /var/log/$DATE/$HOST_kernel.log

If you do decide to reinstall the automated backups are in /data/storage/disk0/backup/system_backups. You can manually do one from either the webpage or the Service Menu. See: http://linhes.org/projects/linhes/wiki/ ... nd_Restore
Everything in your /etc/ folder is backed up but it is not automatically restored.
I am not sure what else you have customized in your fstab but you can use add_storage.py --no_destruction to readd your drives.
Out of curiosity what custom vnc options do you use?
For the lirc files the safest method is to create your own remote template: http://linhes.org/projects/linhes/wiki/ ... -Templates

I am not sure if this was the first reboot since upgrading to 8.3. The remote and audio were fine until friday. The remote was acting up so I rebooted and it stopped working, no vnc, and no audio.

Is it possible to move the database back to 8.2 if 8.3 continues with issues? Can I have a mixed system (frontend with 8.3 and FE/BE with 8.2)?

I added a "scale 3/4" option to my vnc config so it fits on my monitor better.

RacerX, great idea. That is certainly one of the biggest advantages to the new file system so may as well take advantage of it.

I found the following bits in the frontend log. Does it mean anything?
For Audio:

xvnc is now run supervised by runit instead of being launched by the session script. If the config option is valid /etc/x11vnc.cfg should still work. Try removing /etc/x11vnc.cfg and then sudo sv restart xvnc and see if that brings back vnc for you.

For the audio it looks like the maybe the device name may have changes with either the new kernel or nvidia driver. Try the mythtv sound settings to rescan and see if it picks up the new name for the audio device.

For lirc, since you said that irw was working that log message would explain why it doesn't work in mythtv. What remote template do you use? ~/.mythtv/lircrc should be a symlink back to /etc/lircrc and /etc/lircrc should include whatever remote template lircrc file you use.

I started a new thread here about the audio issues to hopefully help those using search engines:

Well I fought through the problems rather then doing a reload.

VNC - I unchecked and then rechecked the VNC box in the linhes menu and that got VNC working. This was a big help as my FE/BE is in the basement so I had to run up and down the stairs to see the screen and then use the keyboard. Good exercise though.

Audio - I did a rescan in the mythtv audio menu. That returned an error saying that the device was invalid. So I went one by one through the available "Audio Output Devices and did a sound test until I found the one that worked (ALSA:hdmi:Card=NVidia,Dev=2).

Remote - I went to the linhes menu and selected a different remote and then went back to my silver remote. That made no change. I then checked for the lircrc file in etc/ and found nothing. I copied my backed up version to etc/ and did a restart and the remote is now working.

I still dont have a sym link to the lircrc file. Is that a problem?

Thanks to all for the encouragement and advice.

Progress is good!

For audio the new driver must have changed the device.

When you selected a different remote did you finish that screen so it could make the changes and then go back in and change it back to your remote selection? If not then it probably didn't make the changes it needed to.

Exactly which template are you using?
Code:
cat /etc/systemconfig | grep Remote

Can you post your /tmp/systemconfig_debug.log

What is the contents of your /etc/lircrc?

If systemconfig.py ran it would have created the /etc/lircrc and a symlink to it from /home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc
