After seeing that new packages were available I started a system upgrade.
It downloaded the packages and started the update.
Part way through the update process the box froze. I couldn't access remotely or start an xterm.

After a reboot things are working, was going to try again. Got the message that the package database was locked so had to remove /var/lib/pacman/db.lck.
Ran pacman -Syu again and now reports that there are still 16 packages to install. The only two packages that installed completely were:
LinHES-config-8.3-24 and libmysqlclient-5.6.28-1
Has anyone else seen this behavior? Here is the pacman, log

Any thoughts on what caused the hang?
