Post subject:  Best way to use an SSD ?

So, I have built a new box, 120GB SSD installed from 8.4.2, and old 500G full of recordings mounted as /myth

However, this is not ideal. e.g. swap is on an SSD partition, and there is over 100G of fast unused storage.

Anyone have suggestions for a better setup?

LiveTV directory on SSD ?

Share all media across both drives (so at least a quarter of them are on the fast partition) ?

I won't claim my situation is ideal, but here's what I have:
Code:
NAME   MAJ:MIN RM   SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda      8:0    0 111.8G  0 disk
├─sda1   8:1    0  23.3G  0 part /
├─sda2   8:2    0   3.7G  0 part [SWAP]
├─sda3   8:3    0   343K  0 part
├─sda4   8:4    0     2M  0 part
├─sda5   8:5    0   7.5G  0 part /home
├─sda6   8:6    0   3.7G  0 part /data/srv/mysql
└─sda7   8:7    0  73.7G  0 part /data/storage/SanDiskSDSSDA120G_163450449009
sdb      8:16   0   5.5T  0 disk
└─sdb1   8:17   0   5.5T  0 part /data/storage/WDCWD60EFRX-68L0BN1_WD-WXC1HB4P

I used the standard installation, so my swap is on the SSD and I've "wasted" the storage area on the SSD by removing it from the active volumes in the mythbackend configuration.

Without shutting down the system and using a re-partitioning tool, I'm not sure you can do much better.

I'm pretty sure running swap on your SSD is the absolute last thing you want to do. SSDs wear out with writes so constant writing would be bad for an SSD.

It is definitely not the last thing I want to do. For me it comes down to speed vs wear. While it is true that SSDs wear out with writes the number of writes they are rated for is so crazy high that it is usually 10s of years of normal usage before that number is hit. I have been running a SSD in my MBE and swap on that SSD for 6+ years now and smartctl reports it has 90% life remaining. It seems that the spinning disks or something else in the SSD will fail long before writes will kill it. I will take the speed of swap on the SSD.

Ever sense MythTV went to all the cutesy graphics I have had up my RAM from 2GB to 4GB.
It is an extreme rarity that anything is sent to my swap file. You can use the command
Code:
free -k

it will give you the Free RAM and Swap file size in kilobytes.
or
go to Xymon and click the dot under memory and see if there is any usage of swap in the
last three days in chart form.

My desktop that I use has a Intel SSD installed as a system drive in 2011. First machine on
and last off. Take everything you have ever read that is bad for a SSD drive, I do that every day.
I just checked the drive and it has 97% estimated lifetime left before I start loosing capacity.
So with a little crude math I got until the year 2217 before I have to really start worrying about it.

I stand corrected.

If you want to see longer than 3 days click the graph.
