Just a quick update... I tried both methods this morning to upgrade to 8.5 from the latest 8.4... Both failed. The pacman -Syu seemed to work until the mythtv-setup step to upgrade the DB schema. No message... Just didn't complete and then would not connect to backend. Then I tried again using the ISO method. It failed during initial setup (Didnt write down the message - will do it again later to get it).

Saw this too late but I am in the same boat. May want to hold off on updating for now.

In mythtv-setup double check the IP addresses in Host Address Backend Setup. v29 changed some of the networking settings. Specifically look at Primary IP Address/DNS Name and if Allow Connections from All Subnets is disabled the IPs can be set manually.

Check your backend logs and double check that the backend is not running (ps aux | grep mythbackend).

I tried an ISO upgrade (also) and it crashed at what I think is it trying to start up X. I did a
Code:
systemctl -status linhes-install.service

It loads the nvidia-340xx driver, after a few more steps, sets the resolution to auto and then gives a message that says
Code:
Failed to start Start LinHES installer at displey

Made some progress by doing a iso install with the Special Hardware option and selecting vesa
Upgrading now.

Yikes, I made the same mistake in my excitement.

ALWAYS check the forums first. I know better. :(

I was on 8.4.3 but on older hardware. I have an embedded NVidia 9400 chipset on an older Core2 motherboard. I did the upgrade and reboot and now I'm caught in an X failure on the splash screen, watching the logs via SSH I can see:

It seems the Nvidia installer hasn't kicked off. Unclear if I can get control of the system and change the driver and continue or do I need to revert to ISO?

Can I force run the installer for the legacy NVidia stuff somehow?

If after a pacman -Syu and it rebooted and you had the message that it couldn't connect to mythfrontend I don't think an ISO upgrade would fix it. ISO Upgrade doesn't touch the db and if mythbackend is having an issue it is probably a db config issue.

Jeff,
From your ssh session run sudo xconfig.sh. That should detect and install the 340xx driver which I think is correct for that hardware.

Doh, I'm afraid that didn't seem to help although it seems like it should have resolved it. Did I miss a step anywhere?

This is the post-reboot situation (same as before, splash screen and if I exit out I can see messages, this is the current log update):

Install finished and a good reboot but now can not connect to mythbackend.
IP address looks good.

No idea why but .... Success!

All I did was go in to myth setup and check on the network setting as BR recommended. Everything looked good and I made no changes. I backed out and it asked me to save changes which I did and the frontend poped up with all recording intact.

Thanks for the help.

Big boy stan, I am thinking the Saving changes in mythtv-setup probably did it. As I said there were some networking changes in Myth. My guess is saving changes added the new settings to the db.

Oh no. Since I did the install with Vesa, i did a sudo xconfig.sh which ran fine but now after a reboot I am back to the blue and yellow LinHES splash screen and going no further. Dots are moving but no backend on any of the frontends. No response from the keyboard.

There is something wrong with the 340xx driver but it is weird. I have 3 boxes that are running 210s and the 340xx driver and no issues. I just swapped in another 210 into my dev box and am seeing the same boot issue on the ISO. So one 210 had the problem while the other three don't. Makes no sense.
