I am currently running 7.02 and my current system consists of 2 drives, root is mounted to one drive and /myth to a second. Sadly the root hard drive failed today. I attempted to retrieve the data off the drive before it became completely unreadable, but was only partially successful. I did managed to get everything but the /usr directory. I will be performing a fresh install of 7.02 when my new drive shows up later this week. Is there any way I can import the database from this backup into a fresh install so I don't lose all my recordings?

Since /myth is itself own drive you should have no problems. Just restore your system, update fstab and restore your db. I assume LH 7 uses the same mythrestore and mythbackup scripts as v6 did?

Do you have a recent backup? That's at least a starting point.

There is also a utility to recreate DB entries for your recordings... and I'm going completely blank on the name... :-/

Of course I don't have a recent backup, that would be far too easy . I think I will just start over, I didn't loose too much, just thought I would see if there was a magic bullet I didn't know of. Thanks guys.

There used to be a program called myth.rebuilddatabase.pl but I can't find it on my machine and by the looks of it it doesn't work anymore.http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Myth.rebuilddatabase.pl Bummer. They recommend putting the files in mythvideo for playback. You should be able to find the recording with human readable filenames under /myth/pretty. They are just links and will be overwritten hourly with a running setup so copy/document them before you setup your new system. Good luck.

Here's a thought:

1. Do a fresh install of 7.2 on a scratch disk.

2. Copy all of "/usr" over to your recovered drive where you have everything but "/usr" and use that as your boot drive.

You may also be able to grab the mysql database itself (it is just a bunch of files) and copy it over to the new install. The run optimizemythdb to make sure it is clean. I'm not home at the moment but I think it is under /var

run SpinRite on the drive. You can find it all over the web and it if it works Pay Steve for it $80 www.grc.com/spinrite it is the best hard drive recovery money can buy. Just shy of some guys in bunny suits in a clean lab dissecting the drive!

I mistyped earlier, I am missing /usr and /var. I may give spinrite a shot, but I don't expect it to do much. The drive just clicks at me now.

If it is just clicking, then it usually means that the heads cannot detect the servo track information. In other words, the drive is a brick now. The only hope would be a clean room and re-formatting the servo tracks without touching the data blocks. With the old drives (MFM, RLL, ESDI), there are utilities that could re-align the heads with the tracks on the disk, but with modern drives, most software is isolated from those features of the controller, since it is now integrated on the drive.

Well, I just got lucky. I had the new drive set up and ready to reformat everything and I decided to give the old drive one last try... and it worked . I recovered the rest of the disk. I booted the image from a USB stick and was able to perform a full backup. I think I need a proper backup regimen. Lesson learned.
