I tried to update libarchive and openconnect first, but they would not update. Once I removed openconnect libarchive would update, but then I could not reinstall openconnect. It appears pacman was broken. Rebooting and now the desktop or any of the virtual consoles do not appear.
I guess I'll be reinstalling later tonight.
Not sure what direction can be taken on this.

I've reinstalled several times, due to getting the system in an 'uncompleted upgrade' state.
I forgot to mention, I am using a SATA 4TB HD, and formatting it with swap -no hibernation as btrfs. but I've tried ext4 in the same manner but still it is not downloading the needed files.

Well you are not crazy... I have a working LinHES 9 running on a Dell machine. Today, to try to help with your issues, I installed from the same DVD on another Dell machine I have laying around. Same issues you are seeing. Not sure what has changed with the Arch install (obviously something) but I tried backend, frontend, and desktop - all with the same result.
I do know that when I originally installed this, I let the system try to do a system update and that completely broke it. After another install I disabled updates and all has been running well since then. I will play around with it some more to see if I can figure this out....
