My experience exactly. Chuck the Liteon in the bin and get a nice quiet one. Asus SATA are usually pretty quiet.

Well I managed to solve it without a new drive by installing the newly released R6.03. It completed the installation process but hung at the configuration stage when it was looking for the uuid of /dev/sda3. A reboot and it started OK. Device /dev/sda3 is listed in /etc/fstab with uuid and the /myth partition is accessible, but I still have some issues to resolve (missing channels after scan, screen resolution, spdif sound, etc.).

The R6.03 installation asks for root password which my R6.02 did not. I wonder if that had anything to do with my problem.

Mike, thanks for the feedback about the Liteon. I was procrastinating on replacing the drive because I was beginning to think that the noisy drive was normal for all types. Replacement sounds a good idea.
