From another thread, i tried up upgrade my 6.04 install to 7.1 and it was a disaster. So i wiped the disk and installed 7.1 clean. Marginally better:

(note - all these worked fine in 6.04, Machine is a single fe/be with a nvidia chipset & 9300 GPU. Has been running previous builds/updates of LinHES for 3+ years).

Video playback is very jerky and the quality looks poor. Have set the display to 1080 and using VDPAU regular. Lots of this in the frontend log:

(searching this seems to be common, but nobody has a solid solution).

Audio setup seems completely screwed. It's just the regular onboard audio. Has always worked. Initially in the Myth GUI when i picked "Scan for Audio Device", it would tell me "ALSA:Default is invalid or unusable". The only options were ALSA:Default and NULL.

When i run alsaconf i'm only presented with what looks like audio capture... but it's 10 copies of the same thing.

On boot it complains about failing to load /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
There's nothing in /var/lib/alsa

Nothing else in the logs about alsa

Bit of a loss where to look next.

To reply to myself, I'll close off this thread. Since both the 6.04->7.1 upgrade and clean 7.1 install went so terribly for me, I took the opportunity to try mythbuntu which worked 100% out of the box. I'd like to thank Cecil and the rest of the devs -- I've been running Knoppmyth/LinHES since 2005 and I appreciate all their hard work. Good luck! :)
