I now have:
KnoppMyth R5D1
P3 1GHz
256 MB ram
250 GB HD
PVR350

I want to go to:
LinHES R7.2
Core2Duo 1.86GHz
2 GB ram
160 GB HD (system)
500 GB HD (data)
PVR350
PVR500

I found this http://forum.linhes.org/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=22098 thread, that is going to help me alot (I think).

My question is: Should I follow that thread to migrate my data from R5D1 to R7.2 directly or should I first install R6.04, migrate my data and then upgrade to R7.2 or ...?

Since it has been a really long time since you upgraded Knoppmyth R5D1 released around 8/27/06. I would say the first thing to do is try a fresh install of Linhes 7.2 on your new box that way you can iron out any wrinkles that you might have before you deal with migrating...and of course backup your old system....

Yeh, it has been a long time indeed. But it just worked! :D

I planned to do a fresh test install, but I wondered if the migration from R5D1 first to R6.04 would maybe give me any benefits. I don't know the exact differences between R6.04 and R7.2.

On the other hand upgrading from 6.04 to 7.2 could again give it's own problems.

My suggestion would be to "copy" your current system across to the new one and then do the upgrade. I would suggest going to 6.04 first before moving to 7.2.

The only big differences that are visual are the upgraded version of MythTV, I think also there was a backend change from 5 to 6 when Cecil moved to Arch.

Wow that release is so old that it predates my own involvement in Knoppmyth/LinHES. I think my first install was R5*2

Yes it's ancient and it is installed on a rare Compaq Deskpro EN P3 1Ghz with SATA support via add-in card. Does anyone want to buy it?

It has worked for me ever since. The problem I has now is that the tv guide web site changed their site and the new script for downloading the data uses a python version that's not supported on sarge (2.6.17-chw-8).

I have (from now) chosen to do a clean 7.2 install, migrate my data and database (like it's done http://forum.linhes.org/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=22098) and install the packages I want and had on R5D1 (webmin, vnc, samba and cups).

For the complete picture:

I managed to get things working with my migrated data.
I even upgraded to R7.4, just to discover that samba and webmin are already installed in this version :?

The upgrade to R7.4 didn't go flawlessly: I had to manually deinstall MythVideo and MythThemes. But after that the upgrade went perfectly!
