I've just installed LinHES 7.4 on a Giada D2301 Mini PC and I'm having difficulty getting LinHES configured with the the USB Tuner WinTV-HVR-950Q.

The install sees the tuner as a DVB device. the dmesg.log shows:

[ 7.791271] tveeprom 1-0050: Hauppauge model 72001, rev B3F0, serial# 6910897

Capture Card Setup in LinHES shows the following:

Card Type: DVB TV capture card (v3.x)
DVB device: /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0
Frontend ID: Auvitek AU8522 QAM/Subtype: ATSC

Scanning for channels in "Connect Source to Input" doesn't find any channels, the scanner times out and shows no lock.

I've searched the forum for 850Q and 950Q but found nothing. I initially had difficulty getting fetch channels from listing source to work, but found a resolution to this issue.

Any and all support would be appreciated.

BTW, I've been away from KnoppMyth and LinHES for a few years and I love the improvements made on the setup and GUI. It looks great--very polished. Thanks to all.

Brian

I have used the 950Q on LinHES for years with few issues. That xc5000: Device not found at addr 0x61 (0xffff) is concerning. Couple of questions. Does the path /dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0 exist? In dmesg (not dmesg.log) do you see anything like this:
Code:
[378810.815361] xc5000: waiting for firmware upload (dvb-fe-xc5000-1.6.114.fw)...
[378811.089830] xc5000: firmware read 12401 bytes.
[378811.089838] xc5000: firmware uploading...
[378813.999102] xc5000: firmware upload complete...
Does the coax you are connecting work with other tuners?

Thanks for the reply, brfransen.

The path does exist: This is the contents of the directory, /dev/dvb/adapter0

crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 4 Dec 30 20:39 demux0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 5 Dec 30 20:39 dvr0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 3 Dec 30 20:39 frontend0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 212, 7 Dec 30 20:39 net0

The coax cable is a good cable and has been verified by plugging a TV into it and watching TV programming.

The dmesg output related to the tuner by typing "dmesg" on a CLI is:

[ 7.791271] tveeprom 1-0050: Hauppauge model 72001, rev B3F0, serial# 6910897

Your concern of the line containing the following is concerning me also:
xc5000: Device not found at addr 0x61 (0xffff)

The other line that concerns me is:
xc5000: Firmware has not been loaded previously

Is there additional dvb drivers that need to be loaded that is not included in LinHES?

Thanks for your help. Brian

By default everything for the 950Q should be installed by LinHES. The xc5000: Firmware has not been loaded previously line is normal but shortly after that you should see the firmware loading lines. It looks like it is getting disconnected from the USB bus and then never loading the firmware. Have you tried a different USB port? Also check to see if the firmware exists at /lib/firmware/dvb-fe-xc5000-1.6.114.fw

Thanks brfransen!

The firmware exists in the following directly:

/lib/firmware/

with the following xc5000 firmware files:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13K Sep 28 2008 dvb-fe-xc5000-1.1.fw
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 13K Feb 18 2012 dvb-fe-xc5000-1.6.114.fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17K Aug 6 20:31 dvb-fe-xc5000c-4.1.30.7.fw

Is there a command I can run to install the firmware since it is not being loaded at boot?

I'll try a different USB port and reboot the system to see the results.

Thanks again for your help.

Brian

The firmware isn't uploaded to the 950Q at boot but is done by the driver when an application calls for use of the 950Q. Since the driver is loosing connection to the 950Q it doesn't know where to upload the firmware. The driver completely controls the uploading of the firmware and I am not aware of an external command that would force uploading of the firmware.

Have you tried the 950Q on another computer or in Windows to confirm that it is good?

Thanks for your advice, brfransen. I did try the 950Q on a PC with the Hauppauge software. It didn't work at first either. I called tech support at Hauppauge and they suggested plugging the 950Q directly into the USB port without the use of the USB extension cable included with the tuner. I tried this and then it did work on my windows PC.

I then tried it again with the LinHES, but didn't have much success with it either. I figured in troubleshooting the problem I messed things up a bit. Today I performed a fresh install of R7.4.

I selected the USB tuner in setup > DVB TV capture card (v3.x). I scanned for channels directly from the 950Q (not fetching them from SD). I have Cox Cable, so I scanned the channels using the following:

Cable
Cable High
Cable IRC
Cable IRC High

The 950Q found channels, most encrypted, but about 5 clear channels I could view. It worked--full HD 1080p! I set up the audio to pipe through the HDMI cable and I now get great audio as well.

Thanks for your help! Now the task is to figure out how to get analog channels configured, SAMBA and MythWeather working.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Not to discourage you but mythtv .25 seems to have broken support of the analog side of the 950Q. It works in mplayer or tvtime but not mythtv. At least I have been unable to get mine to work. I would be curious if you figure out a way to get it working.

Does HD Home Run work with analog channels or did the .25 update break all of the analog tuners. I have a HD Home Run tuner with two analog and digital tuners in it. It gets lock on digital channels, but can't seem to find analog channels.

I wonder if a different tuner could be selected and configured for the analog channels?

BTW, I got the MythWeather and Samba running. The MythWeather didn't get installed during the install process, so a simple packman -Sy mythweather did the trick for this one. Samba was easier than that. it is one of the Systems Settings > LinHES Configuration > Advanced options. Very nice to get these working. Analog channels and Myth2ipod (or mythexport) is next on the list. Thanks for your help.

I was unaware that any HD Homerun had analog capabilities. I thought they only did ATSC/QAM no NTSC. I have an HVR-1600 with an onboard mpeg encoder that works with analog perfectly. The Myth devs suggest anyone wanting to do analog get a card with an onboard mpeg encoder as the v4l support across the cards varies so greatly.

I think that mythweather can also be installed from the Service Menu in Software.

I tried installing MythWeather from the Software Page in LinHES Configuration (or MythTV Settings--can't remember right now), but it wouldn't install. Tried it several times to no avail. So I installed it from a CLI. It works fine and so does Samba now as I mentioned earlier.

I wasn't aware HD Home Run Dual Tuner only receive ASTC/QAM. But according to the specs on the web, you are correct. No NTSC.

I do have a question though about both the HD Home Run and the WinTV-HVR-950Q tuners. In both these devices using a Windows PC and the software that came with the devices, they picked up 28 channels of clear digital TV from my cable provider, Cox Cable. LinHES only picked up 4 of the channels.

Is there any way to get LinHES to view this channels?

Any and all help is appreciated.
