Post subject:  R8 - USB Install - Solved

Trying to do a new install of R8. It's not a "normal" install but here is where I am. I downloaded the ISO and did a checksum and all was good there.

Then I created a USB Boot Drive using Unetbootin and the the R8 iso image. That boots and then drops out to

"Boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds" and throws me into ramfs$.

I found this post.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=77815 which address this error.

Code:
Could you please test in ramfs$:
cat /proc/scsi/scsi
if your USB Device is there?

If so: please try also a
do a: exit or STRG+D directly in ramfs so it starts a second one directly.
Other way is in ramfs$:
ln -sf /dev/sdc /dev/archiso (if your USB device is sdc)

Code:
cat /proc/scsi/scsi

Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id; 00 Lun: 00
Vender: ATA   Model: ST500dM002-1BD14 Rev KC: 45
Type:      Direct-Access      ANSI  SCSI revision: 05

Host: scsi6 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: SanDisk Model: Crizer      Rev: 7.01
Type:      Direct-Access      ANSI  SCSI revision: 00

scsi0 is the hard drive and scsi6 is the thumb drive.

I tried an exit and STRG+D but still no luck.

My question is how to do I relate that information to returned to "/dev/sdc"

Thanks

Ok finally got this to work after figuring out that I could find the discovered drives by running a simple ls command.

ls -l /dev/s*

returned /dev/sda , /dev/sdb, and /dev/sdb1 still didn't have any luck with the link -sf .......

I did some more digging on the ArchWiki and found

"USB Installation Media" https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/USB_Installation_Media

Section 1.2.1 Using UNetbootin

Followed the instructions provided, I don't get the usual LinHes splash screen (which I miss "hate the really small fonts") but it did boot and came up to the install screens.

just an fyi...

I have used this as is for an install but it does not display the usual "Install menu" screen, it just boots right the install program.

Haven't figured out how to get the menu to work.

I was just about to post about the same issues. I was able to get a "normal" setup by writing the ISO to the USB Memory Stick using USBWriter. The Arch Wiki has more information on the various methods for getting the ISO onto your Memory Stick.

USBWriter writes the ISO to the USB Memory Stick correctly, and when it boots up I get the standard LinHES Menu. Some sort of reference/info should be put added to the LinHES wiki.

The info is already on the wiki describing how to make a bootable usb drive using dd.

I tried the dd method. I put the findings on the last post to this thread. But will add it here as well.

Used dd if=/path/to/LinHES.iso of=/dev/{usb_id} to transfer the R8 iso image to a usb drive.
When it boots I get an error that says
Code:
 "isolinunx.bin missing or corrupt"

Thats what prompted me to look for an alternative method of getting loading in on a usb drive.

I used USBWriter to "burn" the ISO to my memory stick because I was working on a Windows 7 machine. USBWriter is just another option that I can verify that works when using Windows. I know of the dd command, but was not working on a Linux machine at the time.
