Post subject:  R8 VDPAU?

My frontends work pretty hard under R8, 100-120% CPU on AMD64x2 2,2GHz hardware (standard definition). The idea when I got them was that they should provide ample power for HD under R5.5 (which they did not - we use mpeg4 around here...), but since VDPAU was already around, using that was of course the aim. The high CPU utilization under R8 tells me VDPAU is not activated per default. I had to install using VESA drivers to get through. How do I install and activate VDPAU now? I figured this would have been asked a zillion times, but I found nothing when searching the forum?

Thanks,
/Chris

The setting are located at:

Service Menu / Mythtv Configuration / setup / video / Playback -> Playback Profiles (3/8)

No installation or other parameters necessary?

Do you have a video card that supports VDPAU?

Have you installed the correct drivers with VDPAU support? (I think you need the nvidia drivers, not the vesa ones)

See http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/VDPAU for more details.

(Once card is working with VDPAU, you also need to set it up in the video profiles as mentioned above)

Most likely, I did not. In trying to make it work, i have now changed to an 8600 GT which, according to Nvidia docs, should support it.

I have not done anything specific. The installation was made with force VESA drivers. It would not start otherwise. How do I install the correct drivers?

Thanks,
/Chris

If you install an nvidia card that supports vdpau, the correct drivers may be used automatically.

If not, I believe the script is install-nvidia-debian.sh (although that information may be out of date).

Run the following commands to see if the nvidia packages are installed:

pacman -Q nvidia
pacman -Q nvidia-utils

If not you will need to install them.

You're not going to believe this! I opened the case on one of my front ends and installed the only VDPAU compatible card I have, with no notable difference. While I was away, the robot vacuum cleaner decided to drive into the open case (on the floor...) and manage to get stuck with a big lump of labrador hairs. After that, the machine would not start at all, and it turned out that the video card is ruined. After removing it and reinstalling the old card, all I had to do was reinstall and now it's runing again. But I now have no VDPAU card. Arrgh! Well, it's just money and all I have to do is get a new one. Suggestions anyone?

Anyway, as for the nvidia drivers I got this message for the suggested commands (thanks, tscholl! :D ):
...was not found on both. I guess I need to install. How? pacman again, I suppose, but with what switches?

Thanks for your continued support,
/Chris

Funny Story...

Read this first regarding a card

Interesting reading indeed! Thank you very much for this valuable link, RacerX!

I was leaning toward getting a small barebone system, such as a Zotac or similar, but that does not seem to be an option if VDPAU is a requirement? They either have Intel or Radeon graphics or in the one nVidia case I managed to find, a much too weak GPU according to the information in the Gossamer threads. The search goes on...

Thanks,
/Chris

The fact that vesa drivers had to be used to install means that the card isn't supported by the nvidia drivers on disk.
R8 did away with the various nvidia drivers and only ships one version. So depending on the card you might have to manually install the lastest version or one of the legacy versions.

What card do you have?

Thanks, jams, for chiming in!
As you can see in my post above, I destroyed my only VDPAU compatible card (an old GT8600), so now I am on the hunt for a new card for my FE2. I'm leaning toward a GT640 - seems to be a fair crunch/money balance - hopefully powerful enough to decode H.264/mpeg4, which we use for HD over here. I need to check power and other requirements.

FE1 should be replaced entirely, since it's an old gaming PC, producing lots of hot air. I was hoping to find something along the lines of a Zotac ION, but it doesn't seem to be as easy as I thought. For VDPAU support, I may need to get something considerably bigger...

Either way, sooner or later I will need to install those nVidia drivers - how do I do that?

Thanks,
/Chris

Now, I have new hardware with a GT640 graphics card. The install downloads and loads the nVidia drivers but then starts in a mode that my TV reports as "not supported". What should I do?

Thanks,

Try plugging in into a computer monitor instead? Computer monitors are more forgiving than consumer TVs. What is the model of your TV? What resolutions does it support? Is it 1080i only or is it also 1080p?
Also try running a linux Live CD with the new card installed to see if something like Ubuntu will work.

Post subject:  Re: R8 VDPAU?

Works when running LinHES FE from a usb stick with a monitor using VGA cable. When using VGA to the TV, the "Invalid Format" error appears.
The TV is a Swedx SG-32T3, supporting up to 1080p (HDMI) and 1024*768 60Hz (VGA).
Running Linux Mint 15/32-bit (a Ubuntu derivative) from usb stick only works using VGA. With HDMI it only produces a black screen, but no error msg.
When starting from LinHES stick, I can see the nVidia drivers loading and the last thing I see is something about 600*800 and then I get the "Invalid Format" error msg on the TV.
What to do?

Thanks,
/Chris
