Guys... On the topic of testing the Realtek NIC, I am seeing a few orphaned videos when I ssh to the new myth box:

Code:
System Alerts:
--------------
orphan on dragon YELLOW for 1 day, 3 hours, 27 minutes, 25 seconds

Go to http://dragon and click Health & Maintenance for more information.

Visiting the web page for Health & Maintenance shows the following:

Code:
Problems found
    Orphaned video files
  dragon: /data/storage/WDCWD10EZEX-75ZF5A0_WD-WMC1S5554273/media/tv/live/2041_20141018183438.mpg   0.0B
  dragon: /data/storage/WDCWD10EZEX-75ZF5A0_WD-WMC1S5554273/media/tv/live/2041_20141018183440.mpg  36.1MB
  dragon: /data/storage/WDCWD10EZEX-75ZF5A0_WD-WMC1S5554273/media/tv/live/2051_20141018183503.mpg   0.0B
  dragon: /data/storage/WDCWD10EZEX-75ZF5A0_WD-WMC1S5554273/media/tv/live/2051_20141018183504.mpg  34.4MB
                                                                                  Total:      70.6MB

I checked these, and have no idea about the 0 byte recordings. The other two look like live TV channel surfing clips - nothing I care about keeping.

So, what causes files to be orphaned like this? It is NIC related, or something else? Can I just delete the files and move on, or does something more involved need to be done?

Thanks...

0k files can be because of a bad tune. If your HDHR doesn't get a lock MythTV doesn't know and it assumes that the file is being written and points to it. I had this problem recently when BrightHouse Cable killed it's QAM channels on me. I wish there was a way to fail over so that if Tuner A can't lock on a channel or is getting interference MythTV could use another tuner before the end of the recording.

Thanks @mattbatt for the 0 byte file explanation. It does not sound like there is much that we can do to prevent those from occurring, if it is a signal lock issue.

I looked into this more and found the "find_orphans.py" script mentioned in some older posts. I see this command is still available on my R8.1.1 installation. Is this script the recommended way to remove the orphaned and 0 byte files?

Yes absolutely just run it from the command line and when it asks you if you are sure you have to type YES or NO and then refresh after every action (it doesn't refresh automatically).
