So, hitting "Finish" in any of the settings menus will cause a re-config even if there were no changes? Hopefully hitting "Cancel" will just exit without performing a re-config.
Generally finish shouldn't cause systemconfig to run if there are no changes. But there are some cases where the db might be out of sync and it would cause systemconfig to run. Running systemconfig.py would apply the settings visible in the UI to the system. In fact systemconfig runs during install and running after install shouldn't ever cause a problem like you are seeing.

Well...

After two tries, I got LinHES 8.1.1 installed again. The first attempt I ran into the hang during the ___Install Database___ step near the end of the installation. I could not get the system to boot after forcing a reboot. So... I put the install CD back in and reinstalled again. The second time, everything worked. The only difference in the options I chose for the second reinstall attempt was that I did not specify a value for MTU. Previously I had been using 4000 for MTU, but with the NIC support questionable, I thought it best to stay with the defaults. I doubt this had any bearing on anything...

After the successful install, I rebooted, configured using Myth Setup and then found that the audio problem struck again. I had to use the audio setup menus and then sound worked. Analog sound anyway. I will try optical SPDIF later once I take the unit down to the TV room. The only other thing I did was to use the MythTV Setup Wizard and for video I selected VDPAU High Quality. CPU usage dropped from 30% down to 6%. Good deal.

I am using the HDHomeRun so network access is obviously working. Guide data from Schedules Direct is also being obtained.

About the NIC driver, I see that I am using the r8169 driver. @RacerX, do you know if this version is a stable one?

Code:
# lspci | grep Eth
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 06)
#
# find /sys | grep drivers.*03:00
/sys/bus/pci/drivers/r8169/0000:03:00.0

I guess this problem can be considered closed. The lesson learned is to be VERY careful about visiting the Settings menus, and use "Cancel" rather than "Finish" if you want to leave a menu if no changes have been made.

Thanks to all for your help

Glad to see the that you progress. Since your going to use HD Homerun I would recommend to test the nic thoroughly. Bang on it for a while and see it's breaks. Test Mythwelcome and see if it breaks, realrek's track record for their driver is not so hot.

What is the "card" that you recommend that I test thoroughly? Are you referring to the HDHomeRun? It is not a card, but a stand-alone network appliance that connects to your LAN. I have had this since 2010 and used it with the previous Myth system without problems. I am building and installing this new machine because the old one finally gave out - after 9 years of service. Can't really complain.

How is MythWelcome related to the HDHomeRun, exactly? I thought MythWelcome was just a screen that showed status info when the system is awakened from sleep?

Thanks...

I believe RacerX is referring to your Network Interface card (NIC), which in your case is probably soldered on to the motherboard.

Yes, It's good test for the onboard nic if your using HDHomerun because the tuner is on your network. Test record a couple of shows at the same time and see if your start to get errors on the recordings or if the onboard nic hangs. Mythwelcome automatic shutdown/wakeup is another good test. Also, in my experience the Realtek onbboard nic performance is second tier compared to a Intel PICe Nic.

Ah, yes, that makes sense now! Thanks. Well, I am already recording shows and will check them for quality soon. Probably when I get around to watching them! :D

I have not gotten MythWelcome setup yet, but that is on the list. I have never done the sleep thing with my earlier myth box as the hardware was too old to support it properly.

Thanks...

HOLD ON - THE PROBLEM IS REPEATABLE!

Guys,

Thinking that the problem I experienced last weekend (described earlier in this thread) was a one time fluke, I thought it should be safe to go into the LinHES settings menus again on my newly installed system. I wanted to set the network MTU to 4000, so I entered the "Network" menu under LinHES Settings. After clicking "Finish", the machine hosed up during the execution of the config change - the same as I did last time. I got a lump in my throat and tried to control my frustration.

Anyway, the eth0 NIC is again out of commission. LinHES will not boot (stuck at splash screen). Ifconfig shows only the loopback (lo). All the other symptoms are the same as last time. So now, we know that it is the re-running of the MythVantage "network" configuration that is doing this.

Hmmm... I am really having doubts about the stability of LinHES 8 now... I did not have any issues like this when I tried MythBuntu, but that distro did not configure the hardware as well as LinHES does (my Hauppauge grey remote, for instance).

I just wanted to let the community know - so that others will not attempt to re-run the network configuration in LinHES Settings and brick their installations.

I am going to use the mythbuntu live DVD to boot the machine up with networking, then mount the disk and try to send a follow-up post with the network install log. I thought the devs would like to see that.

Thanks...

Argh, Realtek 8111E strikes again with their Kernel 3 issues. We have spot for hardware that doesn't work on the board. It would be good to list Realtek 8111E so others can replace it with a Intel PCIE network card before they cross the minefield. Also Linhes 8.2 will roll out soon so you may want to test out the newer kernel and see if it works or it's still the narrow kernel 3 range.

twbutler, I understand the frustration. Narrowing this down to the systemconfig network setup helps. LinHES has used this code since R6 with only a few modifications over the years. I have 2 boxes that have your same RTL8111/8168B network adapter just older revisions (mine are Rev 02 and 03) and I have not been able to reproduce the problem you are seeing. Since it is installing correctly we know systemconfig does work to setup the network adaptor. Where it hangs is after the MTU is changed - correct? Is that all that was changed prior to it hanging? Unfortunately the logs provided do not appear to be from when systemconfig hung, but rather after the problem had already happened. Can you provide logs from directly after systemconfig hung?

Sure... in the interest of the community, I will reinstall yet again and then try the network script. However, this time I have changed out the hard drive for a different one. On the previous drive, I was seeing something strange - you can see it in the log above. I tried to run a command, and saw the following:
Code:
mythutil: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libGL.so.1: file too short

This is troubling - makes me think some blocks on the HD are bad (even though I had checked it a couple of months ago). So, I am re-burning the LinHES 8.1.1 CD to a new disc, and as mentioned above, putting in a new HD known to be good.

I'll post back when I have some findings...

So, I re-installed with a fresh hard disk and newly burned CD. Everything went fine, as before. I choose an MTU of 4000 in the network settings during the install.

After everything rebooted and I configured the system, I visited LinHES Settings -> Network again and exited by clicking "Finish" (making no changes). I got a little scared, as the dialog about waiting to configure took a long time to complete. But after a minute or two, it did complete and the system still looked OK.

Then, I went into Network settings a final time and changed the MTU from 4000 to empty (no value). I clicked "Finish", and the configuration got hosed, as with previous times. After waiting a long time, I hard reset the system, and am now running from the mythbuntu live DVD. I will attach the log files of systemconfig_debug.log that I saved away after each of the visits to the Network menu. (NOTE: please open .tar to view)

Well, hold on. Even though the last time I ran the Network settings it locked up the machine, it apparently did NOT kill the NIC interface this time as it had in the past. I should have tried booting into LinHES from the HD rather than going straight to the live DVD. It turns out that LinHES will boot, and all appears to be OK. The Network script, however, did not modify the MTU as I instructed it to do. It was still set to 4000. So there is a bit of room for robustifictation and improvement, but at least now it is not killing the NIC connection.

I am going to assume this is a stable install now, and move forward. I am running badblocks on the HD that I first used in this system, and so far, it is not finding anything wrong with the drive (1.5 passes at this point). That drive is a Recertified drive from Western Digital - I got it when I RMA-ed a drive that arrived DOA. I am going to keep the new drive though.

So either the first drive was suspect, or the boot media was bad, or both. I have no other explanation.

@brfransen, if you could check the logs attached in the previous post just to make sure that they do not indicate issues, that would be a final check.

Also, there was mention of R8.2. Will I be able to use pacman to upgrade to that version, or will another reinstall be required?

Thanks...

Looks like it is discarding a blank and not changing anything. I will have to look at this a little more.

It all looks good to me. But I cannot explain why it hung on the change to blank as the logs don't show any issue.

Unfortunately R8.2 won't be a simple pacman -Syu update but it won't require a reinstall. There is an update script in testing now: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=23955&p=138928#p138928
