Hello all,

I have been testing R8.2 on my games pc (older Alienware ) on an spare hard drive for a few weeks now. Having really enjoyed its capability I've decided to buy some new hardware to make a silent FE/BE system to sit under my TV.

Former Hardware ( Aurora ALX ) - Test system
Intel i7-975
Unknown Mainboard
6gb Ram
Nvidia 760GT
500gb HDD

New Hardware
AMD 5350 APU
Asus AM1M-1
8gb Ram
500gb HDD (i hope.)

I hoped i would be able to pop the drive out of the old system and install it on the new main board without too many issues. It appears that the drive will not boot on the new main board, suspect its a UEFI related issue however I've not manage to track it down so far. If i use the Linhes 8.2 disk and choose "boot existing OS" it will boot the HDD and get me into linhes, Any guidance on fixing the 500gb HDD's partitions and boot options would be really appreciated.

I've got a spare disk which Ive tried to install LinHES on directly with the intent on testing if i could get the system to boot with a clean install. It seems as soon as 'startx' runs my monitor goes blank and powers off. Im guessing this is down to a incompatibility with the AMD 5350 onbord APU and the xorg drivers shipped within LinHes. Starting the system with NoX in grub gets me to the command line, as soon as i run 'startx' i get a blank screen again. I've tried editing the xorg conf a little, but not managed to get startx to work successfully at this time.

Since I was unable to get the system too install from scratch im not sure if a clean install will fix my boot issues. With this in mind ive tried mythbuntu, and although it has installed and will boot successfully, it will also has issues with 'startx'.

I do not have this board but I think you on the right track.

This first issue is bios boot configuration.

Three options
1.) UEFI and Legacy Oprom
2.) Legacy Oprom only
3.) UEFI Only

Try option 2 and see if that works

Second issue is Amd Graphics.... put the Nvidia Card into the machine and test.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions.

Bios Version "0602 x64"

Under Boot / CSM / Boot Device Control I have tried the following.

1.) UEFI and Legacy Oprom ( Default and does not work)
2.) Legacy Oprom only ( tried this and the system fails to boot and drops me into the Bios)
3.) UEFI Only (tried this and the system provides the message below)

"The current BIOS Settings do not fully support the boot device. Click ok to stner the Bios setup. <snip> Adjust the CSM settings to enable the boot device"

So... based on this and some other digging, I'm guessing the R8.2 does not install UEFI, and the legacy install is failing to call the MBR and boot the system.

Under Boot / CSM / Boot from Storage Devices I have tried the following. With "Boot Device Control" set to " Legacy Oprom only "

1) Both, Legacy OpROM First ( did not work, drops me into BIOS)
2) Both, UEFI first ( did not work, drops me into BIOS)
3) Legacy OpROM first ( did not work, drops me into BIOS)
4) UEFI Driver first ( did not work, drops me into BIOS)
5) Ignore ( did not work, drops me into BIOS)

Seems there has been a few Bios updates since this board was released. Im going to upgrade the bios to the latest "AM1M-A BIOS 1001
" and give this another go.

Thank you once again for your assistance.

Updated the Bios to the latest version "1001", I was 3 versions behind. Still no joy. Same issue where i end up back in the BIOS.

At this point i know legacy based booting works as the USB drives and CDs boot, these are both using syslinux as the boot loader. Still not sure why the bios is not readying the boot loader from my sata disk.

I've tried disabling "fast Boot" and switching "secure Boot" to " Other OS's" with no joy.

The only thing i can think of at this point is ether a reinstall (which i cant do due to the ATI APU not being usable in the R8.2 release at this time. Nvidia card will not fit in this case, although if pushed I can figure something out) or hack together a USB drive with a intermediary boot loader (syslinx) which in turn calls GRUB, which is what the boot cd is doing.

On a side note i did get the ATI Catalyst Driver installed on my system. This required a software patch, see details here. https://bluehatrecord.wordpress.com/201 ... rnel-3-17/

cheers

Will give that a go and report back.

Guessing 7.4 uses MBR with no GPT partitions?

thanks

Downloaded R7.4.

Good news, startx runs and i can get the install interface. Which makes me wonder why it will not work in 8.2.

Bad news. The install failed at partitioning the disk on the first attempt. Restarted the install and un ticked "use remaining size on disk for data partition" and set it manually to 20G.

installed successfully, however the system still will not boot. <Siiiigh>

any other thoughts?

Yes a couple of ideas

First, I'd say your running into a bug with UEFI bios that causes GPT partition not to boot. That why I said try r7.4 because it uses MBR
Second, to dig a little further could you pull the board out of the case and test with your nvidia card and your old power supply.
That should provide a little more insight.

I had similar problems trying to install on my motherboard with built in AMD video card. After fighting with it for a few days I just admitted defeat and installed an nVidia card.

Having looked at the old pc with a Nvida 760Gt, full hight card it requires 8pin + 6pin. No way thats going to work on this tiny 300w PSU. (its on a 800+ IIRC) The amount of work to get that out of its current case would be a nightmare.

Going to have a poke around a bit more today and see if i can come up with something else first. Really dont want to have to dismantle 2 full pc's just to test this.

Will provide an update later on.

thanks for all your help.

Well, its alive again... Its a hack but its alive, and I've had enough faffing for a while hehe.

So, incase anyone else comes across this issue. (Taking HDD from none UEFI mainbord to UEFI mainboard, which does not support MBR booting) here is what I did.

Quote:
Boot from your Live Ubuntu Linux CD (in mycase mythbuntu, its what i had to hand. Suspect LinHes live would have worked. Too many cds / USBs with iso's on at this point.)
Once booted, insert your USB Flash Drive
Open a terminal and type sudo su
fdisk -l (and note which device is your USB) mkdir /mnt/USB && mount /dev/sdx1 /mnt/USB (replacing x with your actual usb device)
grub-install --force --no-floppy --root-directory=/mnt/USB /dev/sdx (replacing x with your actual USB device)
cd /mnt/USB/boot/grub
fdisk -l /dev/sdb(my HDD, found the boot partition)
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/HDD
cp /mnt/HDD/boot/grub/grub.cfg /mnt/USB/boot/grub/
rebooted

Edited BIOS to allow Legacy only devices.

This is not a fix in my opinion but at least it will do me for the time being. Have a incling that if i reinstall grub on by LinHES disk i may be able to get a bootable system back. Just not sure...

thoughts please?

Once again, thank you all for a your assistance with these issues.

So I managed to get my hands on a half hight Nvidia card at work today.

Seems R7.4 will install and boot on my box, on a fresh hard drive. This means MBR booting with none GPT partitions works on my hard drive. Going to give R8.1 another try soon.

R8.2 with Nvidia card allowed for a install (startx works), however with the Asus AM1M-1 Mainboard it still refuses to boot the OS from the disk, regardless of the Compatibility support Module settings.

So looks like my board simply does not like the default partitions and boot config with R8.2. Not an issue, I have a hack. Just wanted to get this all clarified in my head and provide feedback in case anyone else comes across this issue.

I had a similar issue with a pentium based system, no idea if this will help, but it takes seconds to check.

I opened a terminal and went into parted, hit p to display partition info and found that the boot flag for the partition or that the disk boot flag had not been set.

Once both the partition and disk boot flags were set I was able to boot normally.

Again not sure this will help, but it's a place to look.

Regards.
Bruce.
