Trying to reinstall an old frontend to 8.3. Its disk failed slightly before the disk failed in my backend server. Now that the backend is back up and running, it seems impossible to reinstall this other front end again. It has worked as a FE on 8.3 before, so I know it can be made to work. The install goes OK, but after the reboot, it sits with Tux and his remote on the screen and keeps trying to connect to the backend forever. My other frontends have no problems to connect, so this one should be able to, too.
Suggestions?
Thanks, /Chris

Chris,
I have seen this problem when there is a version difference between the front and backends, this happens to me every time I upgrade my backend and haven't done my Frontends yet. Recently I did the upgrade from 8.3 to 8.4.1, I did the backend first and then when I booted my frontend it did exactly what you are describing, once I did the upgrade on the Frontend and rebooted it worked fine.
Thus I suggest you check you mythtv version on the backend and ensure it matches your frontend.
Hope this helps

Thanks for reaching out to help, Girkers! The backend server and this frontend were installed from the same 8.3 medium, but there has been some time between them and it is possible that the backend server has updated itself in the mean time. Where can I see the LinHES version? If they are different, what should I do? AFAIK, there is only one 8.3 medium to download.
Thanks, /Chris

The linHES disk doesn't do a great job formatting the harddrives if it thinks it's just upgrading. format the root partition with gdisk or whatever you prefer.

Thanks! Tried that with an SSD and there was some difference, but still no contact with BE. Will try a mechanical disk tomorrow. The web interface (health & maintenance) finds the "new" frontend and shows it as active, but none of the controls work.
Thanks, /Chris

To check your versions do this on each machine: Code: cat /etc/LinHES-release pacman -Ss mythtv | grep installed

Indeed! It turned out that one of my frontends was on 8.4.1. Dunno how that happened, but I suspect my fingers might have been involved... Since upgrading was in the plan anyway, I upgraded the backend successfully and now I am struggling with installing 8.4.1 on this troublesome frontend instead. Much to my surprise, when selecting the disk to install to, the choices are empty, although the disk was recognized by BIOS. I have tried several disks, both SSD and mechanical - same result? Ideas anyone? Thanks, /Chris

It turns out that no remote frontends or the web interface can connect to my server, just the local frontend. The upgrade (ISO upgrade) failed, but the system went back online afterwards, so I thought everything was OK. I am now trying to re-upgrade the system with the ISO method and it fails again: "Running system config FAILED". What are you supposed to do in this situation?
Thanks, /Chris

The system appears to run, sort of, despite the "Running system config FAILED" error. The other frontends now connect properly. Maintenance does not appear to run and the "health & maintenance" returns the following: "Xymon does not appear to be installed. If Xymon was just installed/started it will take a few minutes before this page populates." The recordings disk fills up so that subsequent recordings fail. Because my backup was dated, there is a mismatch between the DB and the recording files. Running find_orphans.py finds lots of orphans - including recordings that work from the GUI and that I would like to keep. It also fails in removing the orphans with a "failed to delete..." error. I have removed quite a few orphans and recordings manually, to free up some space and to clear up as much as I can. The system now records again, but I expect it to fill the disk again, since the root cause of the expiration/maintenance issue is not fixed.
What would be a suggested approach to address all of this?
Thanks for any help! /Chris
