Post subject:  R8.3 Recovery/Upgrade

Last week I had the main os hard drive fail on my main backend. My current system is/was running Linhes R8.3, and I was planning on moving to R8.4.3 (latest at this time) prior to the failure. I do have access to R8.3 system backups that were saved on one of the the other storage drives. Thank goodness for Remote backups :D.

My question is what is the best route to getting the backend up and running?
Do I reinstall R8.3, restore a system backup, and then move to R8.4.3?
Or
Can I do a clean install of R8.4.3, and restore one of the system backups I have from R8.3?

Thanks in advance.

A clean R8.4.3 and restore should work. Just make sure to run mythtv-setup before restarting mythbackend after the restore as your DB schema will need to be updated.

Thanks brfransen for the clarification. I totally forgot about running mythtv-setup after the restore. I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.

To close this thread off. Everything is back up an running. The database was restored successfully. The only issue I had was with add_storage.py. The system noticed the new drives but when i ran
Code:
sudo add_storage.py --no_destruction
I was greeted with the error below.
Code:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/LH/bin/add_storage.py", line 1124, in <module>
    main(scan_only, destruction, no_mount, install_call, dir_sg)
  File "/usr/LH/bin/add_storage.py", line 656, in main
    disk_num = last_disk_num()
  File "/usr/LH/bin/add_storage.py", line 554, in last_disk_num
    return num_list[-1]
IndexError: list index out of range

Not a game ender. I was able to mount the drives manually, as i have done in the past, but using add_storage.py would have made things much easier/quicker.

Doing a quick search I found a similar thread. The post states that the script has been corrected as of R8.4.1. This is more of a sanity check to make sure I didn't do anything incorrect.

Thanks again brfransen.

If you are running R8.4.3 that error can't be what was thrown because the line numbers don't match at all with the current add_storage.py. Did you maybe copy the error from the other thread?

What is in /etc/storage.d?
How exactly did you restore? Did you do any manual copies from the backup /etc to the new /etc?

The error was copied from the referenced post. I will try to re-create the scenario when I am back home and post the correct/updated error (if any).

As for what was restored. I did a database restore from the last backup I had before the dvr quit using the Health & Maintenance tab.

I expect the error will be the same but the line numbers should be different.

Nothing in /etc/storage.d should have been touched with the restore. I am curious to see what you have in /etc/storage.d.
