It has been a long while since I have been on the forum. So glad to see it is still here!

Today I did a fresh install of LinHES 8.4.3, as the master backend had grown flaky. It went well, except when the system was rebooted, it never was able to load the backend, and endlessly says "Starting OSD message daemon". I am able to ssh into it, and tried running "sv start mythbackend", but after several attempts it fails as well.

I looked at the log files, but I am not even sure what to be looking for. If someone suggests which one to post and would be willing to look at them, I would greatly appreciate it!

Here's some quick thoughts that come to mind without applying much in the way of critical thinking.
First figure out why the messaging daemon won't start (a real DUH! moment for me). When you try starting trouble daemons manually you should try executing the start command which means cutting the command from the /etc/sv/(daemon name)/run file and pasting it at the command prompt. This way more info will come back to the terminal rather than down the sv/runit hole. Or run the messaging daemon directly out of /usr/LH/bin. It's msgsomething.py. Can't remember exactly. Then you'll have to deal with the next problem. I generally find troubleshooting to be moving from an old, solved problem to a new one until the system starts working. There's probably something in the logs but if one can't find it you'll have to try a more direct approach.

It also would probably be a good idea to stop sv/runit from trying to start the daemon. I would think it would be easier to work without the annoying messages that it won't start.

I double checked the md5 checksum, so the ISO is not an issue.

I did another fresh install, was faced with the same dilemma of the backend not starting, but this time I ssh'd in and did a pacman -Syu. It downloaded about 140 Mb of updates. Now it gets to to the starting Mythbackend line and just sits there.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Sounds like gfx drivers. What is your graphics card? What does running xconfig.sh show?

Voila! I ssh'd into it, ran that command it came right up! Weird.

For the record, it is using the onboard Intel GPU.

Thank you for the suggestion!

If it is a newer GPU that makes sense. The kernel that shipped on the R8.4.3 ISO is older (4.4.x) and doesn't support newer GPUs. After doing a pacman -Syu you got a newer kernel (4.9.x) that does support your GPU. I need to find time to roll a new ISO I guess.

Thank you - these steps helped me get an ASUS Eee Box E410 up and running, too!
