I'm using an 8400GS outputting SDTV via svideo using the 'nvidia' packages. Basically, I have some massive overscan problems, ie the output from the card is about 10-15 % bigger than my TV will display. I've been searching here on on google for a solution but haven't found one. It seems as though the latest nvidia drivers don't offer over/under scan adjustment in nvidia-settings. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I'm seeing this too with the 185? drivers. Adding overscan settings to xorg.conf does nothing and there is no overscan setting in nvidia-settings like there used to be. I'm hoping the 190? drivers fix this but haven't had time to try them yet.

I've found a bunch of stuff, with the help of my friend google, that says you can adjust your overscan by adjusting the modelines in your xorg.conf but I haven't had any luck with that yet either.

Looking forward to hearing how you fix it. :D

I read that the 173.xx series does but we don't seem to have that in the repo.

You've probably already tried this, I adjust overscan in xorg.conf with the "TVOverScan" Option. This is with an FX5200 and I believe the old 96 drivers, so it may not work in the newer drivers. I only mention this for completeness for other readers of the thread.

Here is my Monitor section:
Code:
Section "Monitor"
   Identifier   "Monitor0"
   Option   "DPMS"   "true"
        Option  "TVStandard" "NTSC-M"
        Option  "ConnectedMonitor" "TV"
Option  "TVOutFormat" "COMPOSITE" # "COMPOSITE" or "SVIDEO"
        Option  "NoLogo" "1"
        Option  "TVOverScan" "0.6"
   Option "UseEdidDpi" "FALSE"
   Option "DPI" "100 x 100"
#   HorizSync    28.0 - 78.0 # Warning: This may fry very old Monitors
HorizSync    30.0 - 50.0 # Warning: This may fry old Monitors
VertRefresh  60.0 # Very conservative. May flicker.
#   VertRefresh  50.0 - 62.0 # Extreme conservative. Will flicker. TFT default.
EndSection

Right, no effect.... I found a modeline calculator but I really have no idea what I'm doing.

EDIT: Forget about the modlines! Point your /etc/pacman.conf to testing, resync pacman (-Syy) and grab the new nvidia packages and kernel. Reboot. You now have something to fix it!

Nice! I'm not ready to take the mythtv .22 dive just yet so I just upgraded the nvidia stuff. And there it is, easy as that. Thanks man.

@goofee - just curiously, do you also have an 8400GS?

Yes I do. I have the Sparkle GeForce 8400GS SF-PC84GS512U2LP

I'm currently running S-video to the tv on a frontend only machine. I tried putting this card in my backend/frontend and it wouldn't boot. No post beep or anything. Contacted Sparkle and they said try upgrading the motherboard bios. Having the latest already, I contacted ECS (motherboard manufacture) with no response.

Other than that I'm real happy with this card so far. Especially after fixing the overscan. :)

That's just it... on my system I wouldn't say it's fixed. It's better, but still not perfect like the old 440MX was... I just ordered a PCI 6200 which I'm hoping will be perfect.

I keep getting this error when I try to update.
Code:
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: vdpinfo: requires nvidia-utils=185.18.36
:: vdpinfo: requires nvidia=185.18.36

I have core-testing and extra-testing enable, I'm not missing one am I?

I would love to fix the over-scan my TV insists on, but I do not want to downgrade to s-video which was working from the component out which has nice HD output.

Try to remove nvidia and that package first, then update pacman (pacman -Syy) then grab the new packages. When you switch back to the stable repos in pacman.conf remember to resync (pacman -Syy).

OK, I did what Graysky suggested and it's not enough to get a system running again.
There is no new version of vdpinfo, and you have to manually add libvdpau to the upgrade (or mythfrontend will not start).
Also note you will have to either reboot, or at least shut down X and [un/re]load the nvidia kernel module.

Mike

Why is it that each Myth problem solved opens a new one?
I jumped through the hoops and removed vdpinfo and the old Nvidia driver and then installed the new Nvidia driver being careful not not upgrade to .22 yet. So now I can adjust the overscan with nvidia-settings and things look good. But, now the TV guide screws up the whole system. The sound stutters and the guide takes minutes to load and minutes to respond, the whole time the channels I was watching slowly stutters on.
Turning off the overscan is no good and using a fresh xorg does not help. I need to fall back to the old driver or upgrade the backend to .22 then upgrade the frontends and hope that helps. Or just never use the TV guide again.

Forgot to update the thread: the 6200 I ordered is perfect like my old 440MX.
