Post subject:  NVIDIA FX5200 TV-Out crash with 96xx drivers

Recently installed r6 stable on an old PC using an AGP FX5200 card. I am using the tvout on the card and everytime that I restart the X server using killall X or ctrl-alt-backspace the system would try to reload the server and then panic or something. The log files did not show anything, and i was unable to use the magic sysrq keys after enabling them.

After messing around i figured it to be worth a shot to install the latest legacy drivers. after installing make, and running the 173.14.22 drivers installer from NVIDIA (maybe i'll make a pkgbuild) the display now works fine after reloading the X server.

Thought I would post this incase anyone else needed help with this!

Could you elaborate on how you installed make and how you got and ran the 173 drivers installer?
Thanks.

make is from the repo

as root or other user with access run:

pacman -Sy make

then I downloaded the 173 drivers from nvidia's site.

Stop X and xinit, and unload nvidia drivers as root run:

sv stop frontend
sv stop xinit
killall X

then run the nvidia installer

sh (path to the installers .run file)

It should run the rest automatically. Do not let it run nvidia-xconfig as it will make a new file, your old one should work.

Finally, reboot.

This should work as described. I am looking into creating a package with the 173 drivers, as this would be much more graceful.

Merry Christmas all!

That's weird.

I'm using an nVidia 5200FX out of the box with no problem.

I have TVout running in TwinView mode (Cloned) so I can see my desktop (set for 800x600) at the same time I watch on my projector.

I'll have to check my driver settings to see what it's using.

lspci says:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)

dmesg says:
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
nvidia 0000:01:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
nvidia 0000:01:00.0: putting AGP V3 device into 8x mode
